Hey,

Firstly here's my current setup:

E7200 @ 3.8ghz
4GB PC2-6400 @ 800mhz
P5Q-E
HD 4850 512mb

She has served me very well for just under three years now but the graphics card needs upgrading. Since buying the rig I purchased a 24" widescreen so 512mb isn't really cutting it. I have ordered the 5770 but I'm having second thoughts and considering the 5850.

So do you guys think the 5850 will be held back much? I would imagine so and that was why I initially went for the 5770 but I'm thinking that this time next year, if not sooner, I'll be wanting to upgrade the other shizzle so it may be worth getting the 5850 then just whacking that into the new rig? Will she do the new rig justice (I'll be spending about 400-500 on the new rig)? I appreciate it's hard to say what £500 will buy in one years time but some general thoughts and estimates from you lads would be appreciated.

Thanks.

If you're going to upgrade soon get the 5850. It's a massively better card and will last you a lot longer. They are a complete bargain at the current price.

Going from 4850 to 5770 wouldn't be much of an upgrade...it's pretty much like moving from a 4850 to "a 4870 that has dx11 support". Definitely go for the Sapphire 5850 Extreme...with voltage tweak support through using Sapphire Trixx, you can overclock that 5850 to as fast as a 5870.

I had a 5770 and moved to 5850 and the performance difference was clear to see. Im currently playing around with a E7200. Without wanting to hijack your thread what settings and voltages are you using to get it to 3.8ghz? Is it stable?

Cheers

OK I'm sold :p Thanks for the input guys.

Will OcUK be OK if I phone up first thing in the morning to cancel/change my order?

Hey mate. It is stable and she could probably go more but she heats up a fair amount due to my dirty fan and old paste (think I hit 4.0Ghz when I first got her). I'm using 9.5x, 400 bus speed and 1.3125 vcore. It's a bloody nice little chip.

Well just phoned OcUK after waking up late  It was bloody easy to change, took no more than 30 secs. Nice :)

u can always add another in the future when you feel it is strained with new games, will be 5970 performance for very little money :)

It was shipped earlier so I should get it tomorrow :D

Overclock its core clock from 725MHz to around 900MHz (and also overclock a bit on the memory clock), and you will have a card as fast as a 5870 :p

Make sure you download the latest version of Sapphire Trixx for voltage control on your card.

Appreciated, thanks man!

I was thinking about this earlier and seems sensible :)

Well it came today. Wow. I've only played a few minutes of Fallout NV and Arma 2 but I cannot believe how well the machine is handling them. Arma 2 looks absolutely gorgeous and runs smooth as silk. I wasn't expecting this kind of performance increase.

Thanks again guys!

Yea, 5850 out of the box at stock speed is already little bit more than twice the speed of a single 4850, also not the mention the 1GB of VRAM vs 512MB, so that helps too. When you get around to overclocking the card, it will be even faster.

Btw what res you gaming at?
