I have been on tesco pay and go for about 3 years now, topping up £20 a month (which got me £40 of free credit, plus the £20)

I called tesco and they have a deal on thats £12.50 for 500 minutes, 5000 text and 1gb data. I am now on this plan as its cheaper and get a load more minutes and texts.

The downside will be when I go abroad or call 0800 numbers or 0870 etc.

Looking at iphones I can get a 2nd hand 3G for £130 and a GS for £180

Is the GS worth the extra £50 over the 3G?

What other phones are in the region of £100 - £150 which are better than an iPhone?

*cough* you can get a new Samsung Galaxy S for £200 from mobiles.co.uk *cough*

Go to a phone shop and try it out. If you don't like it get a 3GS.

:p

^ payg on Orange but it's gone up to £219 now :( (there's an app to unlock + flash stock gingerbread to debrand. Just like updating your iPhone, easy peesy...)
So many great phones for under £250 atm, I'd probably nab a Desire Z if I needed a phone (most don't want the qwerty though)

Sitting 6/12 months behind the curve is a nice place to be

I've just taken out a contract...

Will look into the Desire Z (though my mates has a desire and the battery life is terrible)

You can just stick your Tesco sim in after it's been unlocked (and flash stock firmware to remove Orange software/branding)

The smartphone technology curve is accelerating at a massive rate. 6-12 month old hardware becomes dirt cheap with each revision so there's bags of bargains around. You don't need to spend big bucks to get something brilliant anymore.

Battery life isn't class leading like the iPhone 4/Defy/SGS2 etc but it's better than the original Desire, probably similar to the 3GS maybe slightly better due to the 45nm snapdragon SoC (overclocks to 1.5Ghz+ too :))

Thanks Sarge. I feel that in 6 - 12 months there will just be something new around the corner in another 6 months, so would never get anything. Similar story with computers. I always go for middle of the range tech which lasts quite well in most cases.

Think itll be the Iphone 3GS I go for at £180. Will check a couple of second hand places today

Don't want to hijack this thread, but what sort of price do people think I would be able to pick up a new/refurb 3GS when the iPhone 5/4S comes out?

I travel a lot for work and so the full-size SIM slot is a big deal for me, and I'd quite like to get a 3GS as my travel beater phone.

It would be a mistake to get either of them now.

You should just get a £25/month contract and get a newer phone thrown in, it wont be an iPhone but there are plenty of older Android phones I'd take over a 3GS unless you need the iPhone specifically for something.

Still, if you must stick to what you said in the OP, get the 3GS.
