Hi everyone

I am doing a bit of reading on the MK3 Mondeo and the stated mpg that it'll get is 47~mpg

Do people who have this engine get similar figures or is that value almost unattainable?

And while people are reading, are these engines reliable or are they prone to failure?
Anything to look out for in general?

You can easily get an indicated 50-54mpg sat on the motorway with cruise control set to 70mph (I can in mine, but mines the 6 speed gearbox). Heard of high 50's/low 60's if cruising at around 55/60mph.

The most common things to look for though on the TDCI:

Injectors - circa £500 for recondioning
DMF Failure - New clutch & DMF - circa £500

Those are the two biggies really with the TDCI, but also watch out for:
Rear calipers seizing (design fault or something similar i believe)
Water pump failing (plastic impeller in original)

Think that is about it, other than general wear and tear really.

Brilliant news, how about around town?

Had mine around 9 months now. Touch wood no issues yet. Allthough it does sound a bit rough at idle. Its due for a service very soon so that should sort that.

Motorways I get around 50mpg at 70-80mph
Around town its more like mid to high 30s. Can get 40 if you drive very carefully.

edit: serves me right for posting this. just had a text of the missus. warning light came on today. booked it in for a service tomorrow.

I have an 04 TDCi 130. I have a 60 miles per day commute, about 95% 70mph roads, average speed 60 on trip computer, I tend to get between 44 and 47 indicated mpg, which is a little on the low side I think, which real world is between 42 and 45mpg, as the trip computer over-reads from what I can calculate.

What I need to do is give the EGR and inlet manifold a good clean as there's a huge amount of EGR soot/gunk clogging and restricting the air flow, so I'm hoping I can get a reasonable mpg improvement on it.

Mine's done just under 60k, and apart from the oil pressure switch and main thermostat braking, it's been pretty reliable.

With my Peugeot 307 1.4 I can get 40~ mpg with my driving.
Thats with town driving and mixed with stop start driving.

Which I think is pretty good! Hopefully get more if I got a diesel.

On the way home I can jump on the M25 and just cruise at 60 so should make a bit of a saving. (Not including cost of the car)

Ive done Innlet Manifold and EGR Valve on mine, one hell of a messy job...but well worth it in my opinion!

Mines a 2004 2.0 TDCI 130 Ghia-X Estate with 125k miles. Had it just over a year now, nothing but troublesome motoring tbh...

New fuel filter
All 4 injectors reconditioned
Replacement DMF and clutch
New cylinder head
2 New wheel bearings (not a big job to do yourself)
2 New flexible rear brake hoses (not a big job to do yourself)
Replaced all 4 discs and associated pads (not a big job to do yourself)
Replaced water pump (not a big job to do yourself, but tricky to get at)

Other than that its been perfect lol. Im not certain I would buy another one again though, especially going on the known common problems.

I had a 52 plate Ghia X hatchback of these back in 2007 and it ran brilliantly, never had any issues. I think I averaged about 45-47mpg at 70mph.

had an 06 one done 160k, new injectors/dmf like other ppl saying, did 47 mpg (on the clock) even round town

So it did the same mpg around town as it did out of town?
