My journey continues!

So I was at Sainsbury's petrol station today, and was presented with more than 2 pumps (petrol/diesel). In front of my was Unleaded/Super Unleaded/Diesel. I am pretty sure that I don't need Diesel but was confronted with 2 kinds of unleaded fuel. So I just put in some Unleaded and went to pay.

Upon payment I asked the gentleman at the til what is Super Unleaded. He told me they burn at a higher temperature, and designed for high performance cars and they cost the same as Diesel. "Soooo...not a Yaris then? :p" I joked. No, he said but he also told me that, now and again, I should mix it with my normal unleaded, apparently it cleans the engine out as it does burn at a higher temperature? Is there any truth in that? Does anyone actually do that?

The SUL will only clean you engine more if it has more engine cleaning additives.

I don't suppose a yaris will be able to advance it's ignition automatically? You never know with these japs, clever guys.

The engine was new from Toyota in 2007 according to wiki, so it's pretty modern - I wouldn't be surprised if it had a few tricks up its sleeves.

Think we should create a whole sub forum of motors just for your threads Raymond. :p

For Yaris I doubt it would make much difference...though a few people I know swear by only putting V-Power in their car. :o

Many ''super'' unleaded fuels have a higher octane number, high performance cars may be tuned for this type of fuel and require you to put that in, rather than normal 95 RON unleaded... Some bands like Vpower or similar add other crap to the petrol which supposedly cleans stuff, increases performance&life, blah blah blah, marketing crap that will likely do bugger all...

If you need SUL, you generally know before you roll up at the pump.

It's easier when you just use the black nozzle which reads "Stinky oil". :D

Proof as to why he thinks it doesn't do as shell states.

I find it hard to find english reviews, but :

I also noticed Vpower they sell here is not the same as in the UK, the review talks about 102 RON, Vpower here is only advertised as 95 RON like normal EURO unleaded (but people claim its 97). I've seen an RTL article before where they tested the fuels and noticed no difference, but I also noticed Vpower in Germany is 100RON and if I'm correct it's 102 in the UK so I guess it's a bit pointless for me to say much more. But, I found this in the past for example:
http://www.autoblog.nl/archive/2007/04/22/bull****-alert-shell-v-power-en-total-excellium (you'll need to translate it), which basically shows that on the rolling road tests, Diesel Excellium and vpower, do bugger all, so I think the same applies to petrol.

I do doubt all the additives make any difference, I think the Octane number is the only thing that really matters.
