Hard-pressed consumers have been dealt a fresh blow after Scottish Power unleashed what is expected to be a new wave of energy bill rises.

The company said gas tariffs will rise by an average of 19% from August 1, with electricity going up by 10% on the same date. The increases, which will impact on 2.4 million households, are expected to add £173 to the average annual dual fuel bill.

Other suppliers are certain to follow suit in the wake of a sustained rise in wholesale supply costs, which Scottish Power said had jumped 30% since it last increased gas and electricity bills in November.

Consumer Focus described the latest rise as a body blow for UK households and said it will further undermine public trust in energy companies.

Audrey Gallacher, the watchdog's head of energy, said: "Companies have been softening customers up for price rises for months but customers will be shocked at the scale of this rise."

Energy regulator Ofgem recently called for the industry to be overhauled after it found that the "big six" companies had put up prices more quickly than they reduced them when costs fell. It accused them of "failing to play it straight" with consumers and threatened to refer them to the Competition Commission if they failed to simplify prices.

Ofgem has also ordered energy companies to give its customers a minimum of 30 days' notice before putting bills up. A separate inquiry has been launched into Scottish Power's pricing plans.

The latest price rises will cause more misery for cash-strapped households, which are struggling as wages fail to keep pace with rising inflation. All of the big six companies hiked prices over the winter and the Bank of England has already said it expects fuel bills to rise by as much as 15% this year. British Gas owner Centrica recently signalled that price rises are on the way.

Scottish Power's tariff hikes mean that a dual fuel customer paying by direct debit will see prices rise by £173 to £1,206. Customers paying by cash on a quarterly basis will see their annual bill rise by £180 to £1,391.

Raymond Jack, Scottish Power's UK retail director, said: "We understand times are difficult for many people, and we have done what we can to absorb these additional costs for as long as possible to minimise the impact on our customers."

Just a joke tbh.

Think I need to change suppliers and fix. I hate changing as I don't trust comparison sites after getting stiffed by npower.

Read this yesterday, I imagine all the other greedy power companies will follow suit anyway so it won't matter who you're with :(

It's not just domestic bills this effects either. Business's will yet again be forced to pass on energy increases to their customers by increasing their pricing, forcing inflation even further up wards.

Aye was looking into this last night, tried runnign a few comparisons to both variable and capped/fixed tariffs.

Im currently with SSe and most of the variable ones were coming in at 40-60 saving for Dual fuel and aroun 50 a piece on sperate suppliers.

Fixed ones were coming in at around £10 cheaper than current and capped til I think May 2012.

The thing I couldn't get roudn my head that on a lot of the tariff's that would save me money both the standing charge and unit cost were higher  I currently have
~11.6p s/c on my leccy with SSE some fo the other companies were as high as 29.5p

With everything else going up, well other than our wages :( (5 years and counting had a 3% pay rise and thats all) I think it might be a decent Idea to fix but just couldnt work out how these tariff's would save me money

19% gas rise, that's a pretty steep rise, there is just no transparency in how the increases in wholesale prices relate to the retail prices.

I always get the feeling we are being stiffed.

I just don't understand where all this price inflation is coming from , demand isn't that high due to the recession yet prices continue to spiral, god know what will happen if the World economy picks up!

Where does it end, they keep jacking up the prices of things we "have" to buy, why not just put it up 50% and have done with it :(

Speculation on certain commodities should be outlawed, how much of these rises are real and how much is just speculation.

I swear they raise the prices almost instantaneously and yet argue (when lowering prices) - they can't as they are using wholesale prices from X months/years ago?

We changed our supplier last night off the back of this news.
We were with Scottish Power and it would appear that they are going to be the first to increase prices.

We've now gone with Ovo Energy.
A relatively new company, they are a much greener company.
We haven't gone "full out green" and gone for the service which uses 100% renewable energy.
However their other tarrif uses 15% renewable which is still around 3x more than most of the other operators.

Fixed prices for the next 12 months.
Assuming we use the same amount of electricity/gas this year as we did last, then at the current prices we'll save around £250 on the year.
So after Scottish Power put up their charges we should be looking at around a saving of £300 for the year because of the move.

I've never bothered switching, they seem all the same to me. They'll all be clambering to put their prices up now after Scottish power's announcement.
