joke made by my examinations officer today....

I think members of OCUK should look up the definition of racist.

It's a throwaway comment, albeit not a funny one, which attempts to to parody the similarity between Chinese names and Chinese foods. I'm sure there are Chinese who think 'John Smith' and 'Pie and Mash' could be names on a register or items on a menu.

I'm chinese and I don't find it offensive at all. I don't think any chinese people that I know would find it offensive either.

It is funny though how out-of-touch some middle-aged/elderly ladies are, and how they sometimes take one look at you and speak veeery slooowwly liiike thiiiis to make sure you understand :p.

Reminds of of something that happened a couple of weeks ago.

Me and a mate were in a lift in Vegas, an elderly Oriental looking couple got in followed by a group of other Orientals.

One of the group started rambling on to the elderly couple for a few minutes until the lift got to the floor they wanted and the group left. When the doors closed the old lady turned to me and said, "Did you have any idea what she was saying? I didn't understand a word of it!"

Its not racist, it doesn't insult any race, you don't have to be Asian to have a name that sounds like something from a takeaway.

Just good spirited humour to break the tension in a tense room, no sane person could be offended by that.

It's very funny, not racist, but offensive to some.

You don't really get away with saying things like this anymore, which is a shame, as it's not intended to cause any harm.

Its not racist, there is no malicious intent in what she said. If someone can explain to me how this is related to a dislike of chinese people then I am all ears

Oh and @play, you deserve to be banned for that thread about cheryl cole, then you deserve permabanning for pointing people back at it again. One of the least funny things I have seen in all my years.

I know humour is subjective, but I cannot see how this is funny. Amusing, in a cringe worthy way throw-away comment from an out of touch teacher, but funny?
