I've never played a MMO, but would like to play SWTOR when it's released. So I fancy having a go at a MMO just now to see if it's going to be my thing.

The thought of MMO's make me nervous, I cringe at the thought of being slagged off by 10 year old Americans for messing up in COD never mind messing up a boss battle in a MMO.

Any MMO's out there with a decent community and not full of flaming?

You'll want a new MMO in my opinion. As the games get older, flaming and in game snobbery becomes more and more common

I played mythos, not the best of games but it IS free

I used the "world chat" feature to ask for advice was expecting lots of insults but I actually got some good level headed advice from several people.

If you don't want to deal with childish crap from the off you'd have to get involved from the start with a guild, clan, group, corporation or whatever that game calls it who are made up of mature gamers and don't recruit muppets. (that said most of them are just as muppety with silly over the top rules and so on).

You could try one of the RP servers on LOTRO.. it's free, and they really don't like douchebaggery (what with most chat meant to be role-play). I never saw any douchery or flaming going on when I played :)

 I was looking at older ones, thinking that the quieter games would be friendlier.

Shall have a look into this one, thanks.

Don't go WoW everyone slags everyone off. RIFT on the other hand... unlike WoW trade chat is silent as (on my shard anyway) and other chats their all friendly. Also as long as you play a DPS you can't really go wrong. Tanks and healers get the most **** for messing up.

I don't know anything about MMO's. Are there generally Clans/Guilds etc that beginners can join and aren't set up as elite clubs?

Could be a plan. I have some interest in LOTR so it could lead to lengthy play if I get into it.

RIFT looks really good actually. What's DPS? I'll suck at this.

Have you played WoW? :p

You need a grown up, challenging MMO to find a good and grown up playerbase, only one I have played like this in the last few years is EVE. Its far from your typical MMO and whilst you get some flaming/whining and the rest in general its much better community wise.

If you start playing Lotro post in the thread on this here sub-forum with your character name. There's an OcUK kin and although it's not massively active, there are 3 or 4 (including myself) players who are on most nights.

Thanks. I'll look into it when I'm home from work.

Is EVE similar to X3? Given that X3 is one of my fave games then an online equivalent could be good for me :D

Should mention its the Laurelin server

Yep a damage dealer. Just need to press a few buttons and you've got yourself a rotation. I'm a Tank on RIFT so not that familiar with the DPS classes. You can be a caster which covers mages and warlocks with different pets (demon minions) or melee with rogue and warrior.

The best thing about RIFT is the graphics imo. Plus the world raids are really epic as you level up as these rifts into 'another dimension' open up, you get a quest and everyone rushes to complete it so you can get some really good raid experience as you level up. The dungeons are tank and spank (which means its really easy no tactics required). There so much to offer :)

Eve isn't really that like X3, tho it does have some similiarities in terms of trading, etc. combat is very different tho.

Eve has more opportunities than other MMOs to go it alone as well as get involved with team stuff, the OcUK alliance in game is somewhat active - tho unfortunatly you would be a bit limited in options for joining the more active corp (TXSI) as the zone (wormhole space) we mostly play in needs about 3 months training or so to survive in.

EDIT: Eve probably isn't the best way to get into other MMOs tho as the class structure is more blurred and combat quite different and doesn't have the storyline/quest progression that other MMOs use.

Rift will give you a good idea how modern MMO's play these days, it takes pretty much all the good ideas from the past ones. Its great fun too :)

Theres similarities, EVE is a ***** to get into but really rewarding when you do, but you do have to have a bit of spare time to put into EVE.

Anyhoo re-reading your initial post you seem to be wanting to set yourself with MMO knowledge to be able to play Star Wars, if so go with WoW, Rift or Lotro though in all of these and probably in star wars you WILL get morons to a greater or lesser extent. Just ignore them (thats what the ignore button is for :D)
