Technically speaking, the AX-850 is a smidgen better than the X-850, as it's actually based on the slightly updated X-860, and has slightly bigger heatsinks. They're still 99% identical though,
 
The hx 850 is a great unit, very quiet even under load, my only slight complaint is the flat modular cables. Theyre very stiff and hard to route. Use the hx with an i7 920 @4.2ghz and sli'd overclocked gtx 470's, pulls 630w when gaming.

Personally I think the flat cables that Corsair uses are a godsend for cable management.
 
The best psu's i would look at Seasonic.

I have a beqiet p7 1000 for a few years and its been great. looking forward to replace it
sometime next year with a p10 version which will be made by seasonic.
