Roaccutane / accutane

How would I go about getting referred to get put on this? I've had issues for the last 2 years that has made me rather depressed, having had a handful of friends who have taken this and had their issues resolved hasn't made me feel any better.
Cheers.

Go to the doctors, they'll recommend the best course of action. I had to try a few meds out first before being referred onto a dermatologist.

They keep throwing me on Duac and Anti-Biotics (By now I've gotten such an immunity to them, all they do is make me hurl when I drink)
I haven't bothered to go back, and as such I've just lived with it.

All it did to me was increase my alcohol tolerance; I suppose I was lucky in that I never had any side-effects (or any that I knew of - apart from the aforemention beer)

Laser treatment is a good option, minus the cost though :(

I was a rare case as it didn't work for me but it done wonders for 99% people, and mate, trust me, I had worse skin than you do.

Plenty of time yet, there's plenty of well proven side effects to choose from, from the immediate (dry skin that happens to us all) to the ones that pop up some years later.

Fragile and weaker skin
Vision problems
Decreased night vision (onset may be sudden)
Conjunctivitis (pink eye)
Contact lens intolerance
Dry mucous membranes (dry nose, lungs, bladder, anus)
Peeling skin on palms/soles
Nail changes
Nosebleeds
Photosensitivity (sensitivity to light)
Elevated triglycerides in the blood
Elevated liver enzymes (indicating liver damage)
Tinnitus (ringing in ears or buzzing in ears)
Joint pain and muscle pain
Back pain
Depression
Depression
Erectile dysfunction (difficulty in maintaining erection)
Violent behavior/aggression
Psychosis (seeing or hearing things that are not real)
Suicidal ideation (rare)
Suicide attempts
Hearing impairment
Pseudotumor cerebri (swelling pressure in the brain)
Osteopenia/osteoporosis (loss in bone mass and strength/weak and fragile bones)
Hepatotoxicity (liver damage)
Anaphylaxis (rapid and deadly allergic reaction)
Allergic vasculitis (inflammation and damage to blood vessels)
Major birth defects
Cataracts/corneal opacities (can cause a decrease in vision and lead to eventual blindness)
Premature epiphyseal closure (short stature)
Neutropenia (low white blood cell count, which makes the body vulnerable to bacterial and fungal infections)
Agranulocytosis (a serious condition in which white blood cells decrease in number or disappear altogether) (rare)
Rhabdomyolysis (potentially fatal disease that destroys skeletal muscle) (rare)
Inflammatory bowel disease (inflammation of the intestine and resulting in abdominal cramping and persistent diarrhea)
Pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas, an organ important in digestion)
Vascular thrombosis (heart attack)
Stroke
Seizures

I have suffered with chronic muscle pain in my left leg since taking the stuff, I got in touch with my doctor at the time who simply said 'yep, that was risk, its nasty stuff. The pain may stop eventually'.

over 10 years later and nope.

Also currently being investigated is the high link between the accutane group and onset of IBS and early onset eye deterioration. Also abnormal bone growths have been linked with the known side effect of weakened bone structure but I haven't heard anything about that study in well over a year.

Roche, the maker have already lost about a dozen or so lawsuits and about 5000 were pending before it was withdrawn from sale in the US.

Well I've been off it for 15yrs so I'd think if anything was going to show it wouldve by now.

* note: I'm not endorsing my actions, I might just have a certain physiology that means I can deal with it

Hi guys,

Has anyone here been on this drug? Considering going on it, not looking for medical advise, just wondering what your experiences were.

For those unfamiliar, it's for acne :(

Yes, I'm 25 and have had 'Acne' for about the last 8 years of so, so i decided to give Roaccutane a try as i had exhausted all other avenues.

It works, works very well for me, can't remember the last time i had a spot, i've been on the medication for about 6 months, very impressed (although it does dry your skin/lips out a fair bit, depending on dosage)

To be fair most drugs have alist as long as that if not more of possible side effects. However likely unlikely.

With any drug there is a risk , its upto the doctor/you to make a informed decision if the pros out weigh the possible side effects :)

Well, here's a relatively recent paper on the use of roaccutane - http://www.bad.org.uk/Portals/_Bad/Guidelines/Clinical Guidelines/Isotretinoin Guidelines 2010.pdf

Also, when asking, ask for Isotrentinoin not roaccutane - it's the same active ingredient, but Isotrentinoin is cheaper for the NHS (£14.99/56 rather than £14.54/30)

I was on it for 5 weeks there and stopped taking it 4 weeks ago as my liver was not dealing with the tablets all that well. I go for my liver test this week to see if my liver has imroved and I'll get told if I can start a course of Roaccutane again. I was taking 90mg a day.

For everyone who was/is currently on the drug - Was your acne really severe?

Nope. My acne is no where near severe. However the ones I do get are deep horrible ones on my chin that don't come to a head and if you mess with them you have a giant red lump on your face for 8-12 days.

They shatter my confidence and tbh my life.

I tried A LOT as you can read in this thread on the first page and nothing worked consistently or effectively.

Day 5 - 200mg of Roaccutane consumed.

I used it.
Wasn't that bad for me, although I still have dry skin in places.

Also I started to drink LOADS of water when I was on it and I still do :/ Stopped me getting any bad scarring from acne though and it made a difference really quickly. I did 12 weeks on it I think but I can't remember, was years ago. Spots have never really come back, still get 1 or 2 occasionally.

Also I had the same type of acne as you. Not a lot of spots, just occasional MASSIVE ones. I still have a couple of weird lumps near my ear where a spot just turned into scar tissue :/ Looks like I've been burnt with a cigarette XD
