Should we be really be moaning at Sony and Nintendo or should we complaining at the people behind the battery for not keeping up with demand for longer life? It seems to me no to be the fault of either of Nintendo or Sony.

Batteries do seem to be holding back almost every mobile device really, I mean, even my phone only lasts a day between charges. Battery tech just seems a little slow at catching up with everything else.

I'm happy for battery tech to move a bit slower than the rest if it means less chance of my plums being cooked by a malfunction :p

I mean we see people moaning that 3DS lasts only three hours but what can Nintendo really do?

That was their design choice. IIRC turn off 3D and the battery life is much better.

Battery tech really hasn't moved forward much in years. That's not for want of trying and vast piles of money being spent on it.

Yeah you can probably get a better battery in your phone or your handheld but since everyone whinges about the price already it's unlikely the masses will want to pay an extra £50 for the top whizzy dog of battery tech. And hardware manufacturers have to cater to the masses.

Difficult one, about the cost of better batteries, but if they did yes initial costs would be high but competition would kick in and the prices would drop, higher demand means higher production, higher production means streamlining and cost cutting, thus making the end product cheaper.

But bear in mind how much modern tech does, how much is running in the background sucking up power, batteries are a lot more advanced than they where....just seems we demand far more from them than ever before.

But how much would the cost go up if they were to use the top batterys available?

This is the problem really. We could solve the battery problems but I doubt said batteries would keep mobile phones "affordable".

It's either that or the devices start getting bigger again to hold bigger batteries.

In terms of phones, It's an unfortunate fact that you will sell more phones on inpulse because of how slim the demo model is in a shop than the battery lasting longer. Something you would never see in a shop.

That entirely depends though. If the better batteries are using rare materials more people wanting them will only push the price up. Competition can't lower the price of Gold, Platinum, Silver etc.

I think it was Toyota who recently changed the design of their hybrid tech so that it used less rare earth metals simply to get itself out of the ever increasing cost spiral as other uses are found for them.

That and the only source for them is China, who embargoed export of them to Japan.

They could always recreate the original gameboy using today's advances.

28nm 8-bit/5MHz CPU.
2.6" Pixel Qi low power screen.
6Whr battery + case made from solar cells.

Like a solar powered calculator it would run indefinitely :) (on a clear day it would generate more leccy than it could consume)

Hmm, I wonder what the kids would want? A fancy 3D handheld that runs for 3 hours or 8-bit retro device that never needs charging? Tetris or Uncharted? :p

It's not really Nintendo/Sony's fault that mankind as a general collective hasn't invented anything better than the existing lithium devices we have now. If they knew how, they wouldn't bother wasting time and effort on consoles. Finding longer-lasting solutions is like seeking the holy grail, and the question in the OP is very much like complaining why we don't have flying cars yet because we watched too many Jetsons as children.

Don't care what kids want, i'd buy one of your solar powered handhelds!

Well you can buy solar powered USB chargers, but I dont know how well they would work with say... a PSvita with a quad core processor and GPU.

Could be handy though for top ups while your at work.
