joke made by my examinations officer today....

If someone read out three English surnames and then said "corr, its like reading a country pub menu", I'm pretty sure nobody would be upset.

Ah, but anything that is a joke about white people or the english is fair game!

Why is it racist?

Linking Chinese names (actual people) to items on a menu, where there is none whatsoever other than language?

Doing it to an individual person would constitute bullying. Doing it to a group of people (specifically of one country)?

Since when? The only examples of racism against white people I've seen have been pretty extreme, which no one would condone.

hahaha was getting all depressed about my last exam tomorrow (will be number 7) and that has cheered me up loads.

It's not racist but I personally would never say it. One of our lecturers is just as bad, for some reason every time we had this particular lecture a lot of foreign students would turn up about 10-15 minutes late and he quite often said things like 'nice to see China are attending after-all'

Why is it closed minded? A comical reference to a list of chinese words, that's all it is.

Not the joke, this.

My only significant contact with Chinese people has been from the chinky, be it local or china town.
That isn't ignorance or stubbornness, that's life.

That's not life, that's closed minded and pure ignorance.

Then they can go take a running jump.

I can't see any investigative board having such a blase attitude about it - ultimately it doesn't matter whether the comment caused any genuine offence, what matters is whether a case could be built to suggest that it did. Even if any investigation found in the officer's favour, it would still have resulted in a waste of time and effort.

Nobody will ever be as good as Sujoy, an Ecomonics lecturer I had in the late 90s. Some foreign girl turned up a bit late for a lecture, poked her head round the door, and uttered in broken English

"Can I... come...?"
To which Sujoy replied
"That can be arranged."

LEGEND
(although he delivered it a lot better than I just did, it was a lot funnier in person!)

Because non-extreme examples don't get classed as racism when it is against white people, generally.

Give me an example. I don't think casual white racism exists in a significant number in the UK.

How would you stereotype white people in the UK?

Haha that's brilliant. Some of our Economics lecturers have a great sense of humour, makes lectures far more enjoyable given how tedious the subject can get sometimes!

White people don't seem to care though. None of my white friends take issue with the word 'Honky'.

Because getting worked up about it is stupid, just like most casual "comedic" racist words that are used by millions of people.

It depends on the context it's used in. Eg:

"yo wassup honky"

No problem there.

But:

"You're just a stupid honky piece of crap"

There the word is being used to wind the person up, and is clearly adding to the insult.
