For folk who think our petrol is expensive... It's more in most other countries in Europe, and we've had the smallest rise of all of them in the last year.

Luxembourg 128p
Spain 130p
Austria 133p
UK 136p
Switzerland 141p
Ireland 147p
Italy 148p
Sweden 151p
Germany 155p
France 155p
Denmark 160p
Belgium 162p
Netherlands 166p
Norway 182p

...and if you still think it's overpriced, how many other ways can you think of to move 4 people and their luggage 10 miles for £1.35?

is this not because our exchange rate is so crap now compared to the €? They've not taken into account people's wages or general cost of living. All they've done is applied the cost per litre in their given currency into £'s, it's a joke.

In the words of the great economist, ME, **** off!

Hi, sorry but to see the cost per mile at 1.35 is a very simplistic and naive way of looking at it. Ther's the cost of the car, insurance, tax, mot, your time and the wear and tear on the car just to name a few. Do these other countries have to pay a large percentage in tax on their fuel as well?
Chris

But I don't live in or buy fuel in any of those other countries...

May as well post fuel prices for every country in the world and go "OMG!" at the wide range of prices. Would be equally as utterly useless as this list.

Change the exchange rate back to £1 gets €1.30/1.40, and then there petrol cost over there would mostly be cheaper.

Do those stats take into account the cost of living and the average wage relative to the price of petrol?

Bang on.

For example the price of petrol seems exhorbitantly hight in Norway, but put it into comparison, a bottle of water will cost you something silly like 3 quid!

Irrelevant comparison is irrelevant.

The bank of England have destroyed the value of sterling with artificially low interest rates. That's why stuff sold in euros priced in sterling is expensive.

What's the 10 year average exchange rate and what's a litre of fuel in Europe using that?

Average wages in Norway are just a tad over double of the UK.

My firend from Norway loves it when he comes to viti me in the UK. Four of us went out for a meal and it cost just under £150. He gave the waitress £200 and told her to keep the change!

When I visit him it's not to bad though - we use public transport, which is cheaper than the UK. Entertainment is actually reasonably priced - snowboard hire and lift passes are the same as in America and cheaper than France/Italy and Switzerland and meals out are actually only 20% more expensive. Glad I don't drink though - £6 for a bottle of Becks would make me cry. Of course, I don't but luxuries over there - TV/s computer niits, DVD's etc - they are all MUCH more expensive than the UK..

Does anyone have a list of total tax take a a percentage per litre of fuel in each country?

There was a good graph on the bbc/telegraph a few months back showing what I think you want to see, will try and dig it up

Here it is:

How would that be of any use? The best way would be comparing it to the cost of living as already mentioned. An average exchange rate will give you exactly that - an average exchange rate - but nothing worth looking at besides.
