... And why it makes no sense.

I can't really talk details as it's a friend relative who is in jail but this just made me laugh at the complete lack of sense I'm British jails.

My mates relative was a book thief, if you know what you are looking for he is quite famous for it. So he's put in jail for his crimes and what is the first thing they do? Put him in charge of the prison library  :p

It's not a serious omfg!!! What are they doing moment but it just sums up nonsensical attitudes which are followed in the jails system.

Yeah that seems to make perfect sense :p

It's not like he's going to steal the prison books is it, and I'm sure his knowledge of books will come in handy. Also who knows, if he has the responsibility of looking after the books he'll realise how it can suck when people nick books from your watch.

Given that a significant proportion of the rest of the prison population would struggle to read road signs without their lips moving, the OP's friend sounds the perfect choice.

Or, what they're doing is putting him in charge but closely monitoring him. That way, if he ever comes accross anything of value the warden pockets it and sells it instead.

It's kinda fair enough. By learning to love books he might not steal them or something.

Personally if he's been sentenced to prison then he deserves it. Unfortunately the Prison system is far to soft and the sentences the criminals get are a joke. You know our countries messed up when you can murder someone and be out in less than 10 years ....
