Is this a bad approach to Ketosis?

Right, so my main prority is to keep things as simple as possible and as cheap as possible whilst on this diet. Is there anything I should change or anything that doesn't look right? One major concern is that after being on this diet for just under a week now (5 days) I am still not in ketosis according to the Ketostix urine strips.. I do drink about 6-7 pints of water a day though so maybe this is diluting the ketones present and giving an inaccurate reading?

At the moment I am eating:

Total Fats: 89.4g / 805 calories
Total Protein: 208g / 830 calories
Total Carbs: 10.9g /44 calories

= 1679 calories

Morning (8am)

4 x Poached Eggs (21g fat, 25g protein, 2.2g carbs)
1 x Tin tuna (0.8g fat, 30g protein, 0g carbs)
2 x Multivitamins

Morning Snack (10:30am)

2 x Hard Boiled Eggs (10.6g fat, 12.6g protein, 1.1g carbs)
1 x Protein Shake (0g fat, 25g protein, 2g carbs)

Lunch (1:00pm)

3 x Hard Boiled Eggs (15.9g fat, 18.9g protein, 1.7g carbs)
1 x Tin Tuna (0.8g fat, 30g protein, 0g carbs)

Afternoon Snack (3:00pm)

2 x Hard Boiled Eggs (10.6g fat, 12.6g protein, 1.1g carbs)

Pre-Workout (5:30pm)

2 x Hard Boiled Eggs (10.6g fat, 12.6g protein, 1.1g carbs)

Post-Workout (8:00pm)

3 x Hard Boiled Eggs (15.9g fat, 18.9g protein, 1.7g carbs)
1 x Chicken Breast (3.2g fat, 22g protein, 0g carbs)

That's a LOT of eggs.... Even by my standards.

What about fish, chicken, nuts etc?? You can still have a varied diet... but that's a little extreme. 1700 cals is also very little, though I'm not sure how much you're currently consuming.

How many calories are you taking at the moment? Clearly your after some dramatic weight loss. I'd probably suggest carb cycling as a more effective method and less dramatic. However it's hard work - but no harder than a full on ketogenic diet. I'd still allow some cruciferous vegetables into your diet though.

I'm already on this diet and have been for the past 5 days.. but the ketostix aren't showing that I am in ketosis.

From my limited knowledge and from what I've read, those ketostix are pretty pants apparently. There are quite a few ways it could test incorrectly. For one, if all's working well and you're doing things right, I don't think you'd register because your urine would be too diluted (I presume you're drinking a lot of water too?), furthermore all the ketones will have been used already - or enough so as not to have a concentration important enough to register.

Conversely, it could be that you are in ketosis and and are eating excessive amounts of fat that aren't being metabolised, whilst not drinking enough or much water. In which case you'd register heavily.

I guess it's best to go with how you feel - whilst reading up on what the general signs are. You could try eating lots of fat, and not drinking much water - then try peeing on the stick and see how it goes.

Yeah, 16 eggs a day is slightly extreme but it's not as expensive as buying chicken and the like.. Should I be adding more fats?

The amount of protein you are eating in ratio with fat could be keeping you out of Ketosis, excess protein can be converted into blood glucose via a mechanism called gluconeogenesis, you would then use this glucose as energy as opposed to fat.

I would say reduce protein and increase fat, 89 fat grams daily is low for a ketosis diet (hell! thats virtually a low fat diet!) make sure fats come from good unadulterated sources such as animal fats in meat, eggs, butter, cheese, oily fish, olive oil, coconut oil etc. Avoid nuts as these contain carbs.

I think I will up my fats and see how that works out.. what could I consume that is high in good fats but on the lower side in terms of protein and zero carbs without having to drink olive oil straight? lol

Butter! coconut oil is also a superb fat with numerous health benefits, it can be used in lots of different ways. Try this: Put in a blender 3 raw eggs, 2 tablespoons of butter (approx 26grams) 2 tablespoons of coconut oil, add 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon, half teaspoon of ground nutmeg, 2 and a half cups of freshly boiled water, blend for about 20 seconds, contains: 19 grams Protein, 65 grams fat, virtually carb free just 2 or 3 grams from the cinnamon.

You can also eat fattier cuts of meat, lamb, belly pork, beef rib. Just make sure you are eating more fat than protein. Here are a couple of links for coconut oil purchase. Also read up on the health benefits of coconut oil, you'll be amazed how good for us the stuff is.

That sounds absolutely disgusting but I will give it a go lol :D

Thanks mate!

It sounds like a cake mix! Wonder what would happen if you baked it, lol.

It would end up like a souffle, you could grate some cheese and put a sprinkle of Worcester sauce in it instead of the cinnamon and nutmeg before chucking it in the oven! Awesome idea mate, been getting a bit bored of the egg drink lately so will try this.

Here you go mate! a baked egg drink.:p

All the same ingredients as above but added 1 extra egg, ommited cinnamon and nutmeg, added salt, pepper, grated cheese, shake of Worcs sauce. It's still in keeping with the keto diet with the changes. You could let it cool and then refrigerate it so all the butter and coconut oil completely resolidify, you could then eat it cold a bit like a quiche. You could also add small amounts of fresh tomato and/or onion, pepper before cooking, easy on these for keto though as they contain sugar albeit very low amounts.

Hehe, nice. I think you should still try it with the Cinnamon and Nutmeg left in. Might end up quite nice.

I'm not on a Keto diet, but in trying to get my Protein intake high for bulking, one of my favourite meals is Frittata. Easy to make, based around loads of eggs and you can add loads of stuff to make it more interesting. I like adding a bit of Chorizo or other spicy sausage together with peppers and onions etc.

That looks nice! Definitely going to try this, but can't guarantee it'll turn out anything like that lol
