Steam are a complete wast of space!

Provide proof that you have bought the game brand new retail, picture and receipt.
They will either activate the key for your account or provide you with a new one.
That and whomever has your key registered to their account will most likely be banned for key genning.

Yep. Eggs, basket etc. I don't understand how people can buy games exclusively on Steam when there are always stories like this going around.

Well if you bought a game on steam then this wouldn't happen.

I was speaking more of the broader issue of Valve's enthusiasm for locking accounts by default at the slightest issue and their almost legendarily poor customer service.

well this would have happened with any game that had a cd key and online registration/mp wouldn't it?

Chances are it could be a member of staff that has done it, when I used to work for Electronics Boutique (just as it was being taken over) we were allowed to take games home, play them, take them back, shrink wrap them and sell them on.

Serial codes weren't a real issue back then as this was 12 years ago now, but it will still go on.

I had the same issue with a game form the same place i think back when i bought LFD2 but i sent all the info they requested so it does work and yes it is an utter pain in the arse as i didn't buy it to play it several days later.

Ive managed to get BLAH << renamed game store to issue me with another working serial.

That said I cannot believe the ongoing saga with STEAM.

Gobsmacked is the word!

**Ive removed the retailer and steam advisors name**

Message by you on Wed,

Hello. I have just purchased a copy of Portal 2 from blah I have just tried to install the game using the following code

However it states that the game has already been activated. This I can only presume is via a key gen etc as the game was brand new and sealed.

How do I go about getting a new code? Blah stated they do not except PC returns and im not happy to lose my money

Message by you on Thu,

Can you PLEASE look into this please?

Message by you on Thu,

Ive contacted Blah again who inform they will try to contact you direct regarding this matter. I have let them know my account name and serial of the game in order for you to tie the two together.

Hello

Thank you for contacting Steam Support.

Message by you on Thu,

Its BRAND NEW!!!! Retail from a retail store!

Please can you look into this!

Just to make myself 100% clear incase I havent over the past few entries.

The game was bought SEALED from a retail store BRAND NEW.

I opened the game personally and tried to install, however I could'nt as your authorisation system informs that it is a duplicate key.

I havent traded nothing. I legitmately bought this game from the high street!

The title to this support ticket clearly states it was brand new.

Please can you look into this as a matter of urgency?

Can you PLEASE resolve this as the retailer will NOT refund on pc software.

Ive attached the receipt and game manual with cd key printed on it.

Regards

Message by you on Thu,

added a further picture of the serial (on the manual) and the support ticket screen in the background.

Message by Steam on Thu,

Hello

Please send a picture of the receipt so that the amount shows.

Steam Support.

Message by you on Thu,

Here you go.

I cannot for the life of my understand why this amount of info is required!!!!!!! It was bought brand new, and yet here I am days later still unable to play it.

I buy quite a lot of games and own many on Steam. Cant you just find out when this serial was originally registered?

Can this be escalated to your management team for investigation please??

Message by you on Fri,

Blah has issue me with another serial code for this game. As such I no longer need this code.

That said obviously someone has cloned the original number so you should look into it

Message by Steam on Fri,

Hello

The price for a new game is £29.99

Please contact the seller about a refund.

Message by you on Sat,

No, the price for a new game is £15 as it was on special offer in the store! I cannot believe you are still questioning the fact. Blah do not sell second hand PC games nor have they ever as far as im aware. The game was 10000000000% brand new and sealed.

I have supplied the receipt etc etc and still you do not believe this. Im completely speechless to be honest.

You can contact them direct to confirm if you wish as you may come across this from someone else in the future..

I no longer require this serial to be linked to my account as the retailer has given me another copy of the game.

Tbh... I know it doesn't excuse them for not resolving your issue, but your attitude toward them stinks. :/ Questioning them when they ask you to do simple things, whining about them taking so long, demanding that they escalate it because you "buy a lot of games on Steam", demanding that they contact a random shop in another country to investigate.

Steam support have always been massively helpful and friendly toward me when I've used them. It's not the fastest service, but that's the nature of the amount of tickets they recieve. Posting new responses to them doesn't help as it sends you to the back of the queue as well. :/

At least you got it sorted in the end. :)

I ran into the same problem when i bought metro 2033 second hand. Instead of messing with steam I managed to get the game to work by extracting the files from the cd. Its a pirate way of doing it but it worked like a charm for me and saved me a lot of time...

Granted I may have been a bit short. I was just frustrated to be honest.

I bought the game in good faith. To be told by the retailer that they couldnt / wouldnt help.

Steam did not and still do not want to know.

TBH i dont see why the retailer can not give you another game,i bought splinter cell conviction from coolshop and the disk had a bad mark on it when opened and would not install,at first they refused saying its not our policy to exchange pc games due to the game being opened and key may have allready been used,i stood firm and demanded they send another copy of the same game which i got.
Surley customers have some sort of rights about returns against retailers:confused:

Yeah, we do. A retailer has to sell a working product. If it isn't working we can ask for a refund or exchange.

As for the thread, yeah the OP might have handled it a little better but Valve were hardly going out of their way to help.

Your emails are far to emotive. I know its resolved now but next time just send them the stuff they ask for. I know its frustrating but that's life. It's also not steams fault you got a key that had been cloned. Their system has clearly worked.
