Steam are a complete wast of space!

Would you like some cheese with your whine? :p

Hello,

I recently bought Portal 2 brand new, on special offer inshore.

However, when trying to install the game it appears the serial key has been cloned/stolen etc.

The retailer will NOT accept a return as the game has been opened.

I attach proof of purchase and trust you can help :)

Thanks

This is what you should have typed. Nothing more.

Tbh... I know it doesn't excuse them for not resolving your issue, but your attitude toward them stinks. :/ )
Very pedantic aren't you, always finding something to pick at. You said yourself Steam were inexcusable for not resolving his issue, so stop nitpicking for once. And as for the guy who said Steams system clearly worked, how did it? Dauthi had to endure the hassle of going back and forth to his local game shop just to tussle with staff to get a working key that he'd already paid his hard earned money for. What if he bought the game online? He'd be snookered that's what.
People are quick to tell the OP that his emails were far too emotive, but what about Steams replys? Go back and read them again, they were taking the P for real.

Glad to hear you got it sorted in the end anyway, colthillary.

How did it not work? It stopped 2 copies of the same key being activated on their system. It worked fine. The fact that the op didn't resolve the situation was down to him not providing the correct information to them when asked. He chose to repeatedly go back and forth to the shop when he could have (as others have and even told him what to do on early posts) easily sorted it with steam. He chose to rant at them and question why they wanted the information rather than just give them it.

I'm not having a go at the op, it is frustrating when stuff goes wrong but there's a right and wrong time to rant.

Agreed. Demanding that it be "escalated to the management team for investigation" is rather laughable really. What was your next request going to be, have it personally looked into by Gabe Newell?

All that serves to do is undermine your actual complaint and make the person on the other end even less likely and willing to help you. Try being polite and patient next time.

Called a whambulance yet?

The biggest advice I'd give anyone trying to deal with someone in a support role is to be polite. Regardless of the process, they're still humans and being a complete arse towards them is never going to get anything resolved, it's going to make them less likely to want to help you.

They probably have to sort through 50+ support tickets a day. You think they're going work extra hard for the ones that are having a go at them and questioning their procedures? Demanding things of anyone is never going to make them want to give it you.

Also as I posted on the last page, each time you added something to the ticket that bumped it right to the back of the queue again.

Yeah I agree steam is a bit crap

I just only this morning plumbed deeper into the depths of its crapness

I had X3 installed and due to space limitations had to remove it

So being a bright spark I thought I would use the steam backup util

so that If I want ed to restore it I could and not have to download loads again ... or so I thought

So I went to he backup and discovered that steam has mananged to compress
the game down to a 249MB from the original 8GIG , impressive ?

So I runs the installer backup to restore the game , and it bloodly well goes off to download the remain 7GIG ?????????????

What was the point in backup , when it clearly backups up nothing ?

Others who have used the backup util , I would chcek to see what you actually have

Sounds like you set it to split it into chunks, you should have had more than one .sid file to copy across in that case.

It's always worked fine for me, it's just not particularly quick. Pretty sure most people here just Ctrl C + V for backups.

You are aware that almost nobody uses the steam backup utility right? Its prone to crashing when trying to restore large files so everyone just copies the game folder from steamapps...

And as order said... sounds more like you made the mistake there not steam.

I've never had a problem with steam and don't know anyone who has, and out of millions of users only see a few of these posts so I'd say the system works pretty well. Glad its sorted OP, this kind of situation is very frustrating, but as others have said in the future just be polite and give them the information they request and it'll be sorted much more smoothly.
