ive been doing quotes for the past 2 days and im just not getting anywhere, i dont understand half of this, for example, if my cars parked on a public road, its 'X' amount of money to insure, then i go back and put that its garaged...and it goes up.....then i put it back to the public road and i get totaly different prices from when it was on the road 5mins before that haha.

it looks like ill be ringing up as these online quotes dont seem to know what there doing, so are there any new drivers here that know where to go for insurance, or know any way to get the cost down, as atm im at £3500.

Whats the car, your age and your location? Fully Comp, TPFT or just third party?

Putting it on the road is usually cheaper than on the drive or garaged for some reason. Likewise add a woman to your policy and it should drop a fair bit too.

Unfortunately you're never going to end up being happy with what you pay for your first years insurance.

yup, well after trying a few different cars, we ended up to the conclusion that getting a Saxo VTR 1.6 is cheaper overall than a 1.1 Renault clio....its crazy, for the clio it was £3100, for the VTR its £3500, but the clio's we have seen cost 400-600 more than the VTR, im not really complaining :p,
same for a 1.1 206....that is £3200.

ive been going back and forth to the quote just changing things back and too, to see what i can do, but im pretty much going nowhere, dont mind paying the £3500, its all about the 1 year no claims, but im trying my best to get the price down.

and TPFT seem's to be the cheapest so it will be that, it allways used to be Third party only that was the cheapest!, things have changed though i notice, and im 21, and im in chester.

What usually works with me is admiral/elephant/bell (try all three because even though they are the same company underneath they all come up with different prices). Putting on two much older named drivers do absolute wonders to my quotes, we're talking chopping a few grand off .

i just tried that, i put 2 much older additional drivers on, and it went up by quite a bit.

it seems to me that comparethemarket changes by the minute, the top 10 quotes change every few minutes, dont know wether the site is a little bugged or something.

Another way we are thinking of, putting my nan as the main driver, and me as a additional driver, More than are offering that as £1500 fully comp, and the additional driver can drive the car whenever he wants, ofc that will mean no, no claims for me.

Don't bother going with compassion sites. They still tells me I need to spend £5k insuring a Fiesta 1.1 LX even after a few years experience and NCB. They're alright when you live in a good area, middle aged with a couple of years NCB and want to get insured on a Mondeo, but if you live in the ghetto, don't have much experience or want to get insured on something unusual they're a bit rubbish. Put the leg work in and go direct. I spent about a solid year researching insurance for my first car.

Clios and Saxos are both expensive to insure full stop, for a first driver anyhow. Try something else.

Well, they're not really.

Trying a Fiat Uno might get the price down a little but it isn't going to have much of a dent to a lad that is getting quoted £3.5k+ for a Saxo.

Fiesta 1.25 £3200
Peugeot 206 1.1 £3200
Clio 1.1 £3100
Vauxhall Corsa 1.0 £2990

What isnt expensive. :p.

it really is a joke, i passed on wednesday, been searching since.

Considering I'm on my second year of driving I've done everything the OP has and realised those cars were never going to give me a decent premium.

So, what did give you a decent premium ?

Car choice wasn't mine in the end through my dad being generous but it was a Corsa, fully comp £1800 with Tescos, that price wasnt from a comparison site either, they hike prices up you'll need to get quotes from specific insurers. It's a painful process but very worth it!

you just gave each insurer a ring ?, dont know where to start, theres a place called 4youngdrivers that keeps popping up.

Isn't 4youngdrivers the one with the box? dodge that :p they monitor your driving times/mileage/speed whatever. Each site usually has its own quote thingy, otherwise yeah ring em up.

sod that then lol, got one here called insure the box, which fits the car with a mileage data box, if you go over your esitmated mileage you have to pay more, £2521 as me as the main driver, fully comp, have to pay for more miles, seriously. , you buy the car, pay tax, pay for fuel, and now pay for miles you cover...

Will your nan be the main driver? If not it's a very bad idea to lie to insurance companies. Adding additional women as extra drivers can help, but the best effect seems to be with ones between about 35-55.
