ATi 6950 (1GB variants) that can unlock to 6970?

So I've read on various message boards that a few of the 1GB models can actually fully unlock to a 6970, despite some naysayers saying only the 2GB models are capable of this.

Does anybody know of which models this actually works with, and if those early revisions are still available for purchase, rather than potentially newer laser cut revsions?

A massive thank you to anybody that can help me in my quest!

Edit: Alternatively an uber cheap 2GB that is guaranteed to unlock would suffice.

OCUK have the 2GB Asus that can unlock.

I've just this second place a bid of £80 on one brand new

I also bought 4 for £184 that are all rev 1's

Go for the 2GB tried and tested!

I've been researching this and supposedly unless you get one with a write protected bios, then they'll all unlock shaders. Now whether or not those shaders are any good is another matter.

I can't find any record of someone bricking their 6950 by unlocking the shaders on the bios their card shipped with, but that's not to say it hasn't happened.

That said apparently unlocking the shaders is only good for 2-3 extra fps.

Only 2-3? Ouch.

Being that I'm currently using a GTX 275, is there much point in me upgrading at all to any of these cards?

My cpu is an i5-750.

Yeah i would say , for a start your would have the choice of dx11.
I upgraded from a gtx 275 to a 6950 2gb ( 6970 bios ) and the performance is worth it , runs everything so much smoother 2-3 extra fps does'nt sound much but tbh its free so what do you want

For the record I just tried this on a xfx 6950 xxx 1gb (single fan) and it worked fine. Stock bios with just the shaders unlocked. Dead pleased.

Hi

I tried with my twin fan version and couldn't do it :( I extracted bios no problem then edited it but it wouldn't allow me to flash back. If you have any suggestions of how you did it that would be good. Other wise I suppose mines locked booooo

How easy is it to change a 6950 to a 6970? Scale of 1-5 say :D

Is it still possible on all of the latest cards? I'm sure I read that the current editions are all protected for just this reason...
