Phenom II (955), how hot can it go?

Bit curious. I was always told, assumed might be a better word, that 55c was the max safe temp for phenom IIs. However I've stumbled on a couple pages which state 62c, several sating both 55 & 62 in separate places. Then again, half the places/people I've encountered ocing these chips total ignores the cpu nb even when amd own oc guide stresses its importance. Anyway, confliction aside I'm left wondering which is correct, 55 or 62, and perhaps more importantly why I keep seeing two temps instead of one (must be a reason).

Could someone please clear this up for me? I currently hit 54 under linx, summer temps at mid day add 1 degree with cpu heavy apps e.g. encoding generally sitting 3 degrees below linx i.e. 54/55 - 51/52. Cpu nb is currently 2600 and the voltage needed for 2800 will add 1 degree t temps, so for safetys sake I'll say +3/4 for 3000 meaning a potential linx temp of 58/59. Is this pushing it too much?

They start to throttle back around 65ºc IIRC. So 62ºc sounds about right.

62' really.

I can run mine at 4.3GHz with a Hyper 212 Plus - but temps peak at 64'

62 is AMD's recommended limit, but on the standard cooler mine got to 64C almost all the time at stock.

i think you need to back the voltage down a bit cookeh. sadly this will probably make your overclock unstable, so you might have to back that down as well

Curious how they would do this when the core sensors are always wrong :rolleyes:

Can you point me to amd actually saying that please? Iirc is basically the problem. It's like reading Chinese whispers. If 62 is indeed the max limit then why are there so many people saying 55?

Reminds me of when I forgot to plug pump in for H60 and temp when up to bout 88 (only for a feww seconds, looked in BIOS).

Also, another comp I made w/ Phenom 840 claims temps of 18c :S

Reminds me of the time I only pushed 3 of the 4 pins into a cooler, then wondered why my pentium had begun to sound like a 775

Anyway I found the C3 page http://products.amd.com/en-us/DesktopCPUDetail.aspx?id=618 but it's identical to the C2. It also, sadly, seems cheap 760 chipset boards aren't capable of providing enough voltage close to the upper limit of the cpu nb (safely). I'm so close to being stable

but I'll have to do with 2800. It's amusing in a way. I pushed to core up to 3.7 whilst undervolted but the cache... 1.1 - 2000, 1.15 2200, 1.2-2400, 1.275-2600, 1.325-2800, ~1.5-3000.

Still, 10-12% performance gain for adding ~3watts and 3ºC seems a good balance, plus it leave room for a higher core when I finally buy a better mobo (54º under linx with pwnm on

).

you sure you dont have one of those stupid chips where standard volts is higher than normal, like 1.45V. i've heard of someone where this was the case. i'm pretty sure standard volts is suppost to be 1.35V

other than that i will give the usual suggestions of the temperature sensors not reading it properly in whatever program you have, reseating the cooler, etc

My chip never went over 60 on the stock cooler! I would try reseating the cooler Cookeh.

I thought the mobo decides on the voltage and not the cpu.

I had exactly this problem with my Phenom II . Standard volts in bios set at 1.45V .... dropped it down to 1.3V and it's running much cooler and still stable , no OC though . From what I've read I think you can get as low as 1.2V .
