The Prime Minister has pledged an extra £814m to help save children in the world's poorest countries from largely preventable diseases.

Yes, it's for a good cause, but after constantly hearing of cuts in various areas and how the UK is struggling, I have to wonder why it continues to give millions or even billions away...

I think we should continue giving a helping hand to poorer countries, but surely only at a time when we're not struggling ourselves?

This will no doubt be a topic of huge discussion in the coming days. Can it be justified, in my opinion no, charity starts at home and the UK simply cannot afford this, whether its the right thing to do or not.

i think he is right to do this. however as the saying goes "no good deed goes unpunished" and he will probably get a lot of hard questions in how he can justify this while making so many cuts elsewhere

He wont be able to justify it though will he. Why should tax payers pay for this when our own tax payer funded services are being cut everywhere?

The point is what we class as "struggling" and what the poor countries class as "struggling" are not even on the same planet.

We are on the whole warm, fed, have electricity & running water....when we don't have those things as standard we can class ourselves as struggling.

i really don't see the issue - so much money is wasted in this country, they should sort that out first. I'm glad some of my tax is going towards something which will help people far less fortunate than me, not some MP making a bogus expenses claims, and i think it's quite embarrassing that people want this to stop.

edit - in fact, this makes me angry - the number of brand new, posh, expensive cars on the roads makes me wonder if we are hard up. If my gf and I can't afford to run two cars because taxes go up to pay for the deficit...is that really such a big deal compared to some poor kid who is going to die by something that could quite easily be treated\prevented?

How can we afford our 50 inch plasma TVs for watching Jeremy Kyle on while on jobseekers if we are giving this kind of money away to help eradicate disease. It's ridiculous.

That's not the point though. As said, why should our taxes be used on other countries, when spending cuts in the UK are rife? It is simply mind boggling.

He shouldn't try to satisfy the entire world when we can't afford to, and we shouldn't have to make savings, cost cut and see the quality of our tax funded services decrease whilst money is being thrown at other countries like it's going out of fashion.

I think my biggest objection to this is that it isn't actually a thought-through policy.

"Oh woe is the world, lets vaccinate and save lots of poor little children" = vote winner at home.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the majority of countries these vaccinations will be taking place in cannot feed their current population. Most have little/no infrastructure, are constantly involved in civil wars and have been dependant on "1st world" aid for the last 30 years or so.

Exactly how is a population increase going to help these people?

i am always of the view if you can help, do. I would rather be taxed high if it means stopping easily preventable deaths and the suffering of others. and 814M of 5 years is pennies really on governmental scale. try doing anything in the forces with 814M it wont get you far.

Just because our country isn't in the best shape it have ever been doesn't mean we should stop helping others.

I don’t have a problem with this. We have foreign aid allocated in the budget and it will be good to see it being spent well.

exactly just because there from another country doesn't make them any different to us. I hope one day in the future we will all be united but until this happens we need to help the less fortunate.

I imagine that UK pharma will probably have quite a windfall providing all of those vaccines!

In poor countries where famine is an issue, for example, it means that the population will increase to an even more unsustainable level, compounding the problem and requiring more food aid.

That's my objective view on it, even though it's good to help others if we can afford it.

Sadly, that's my view on things too..

The PM and his side-b*tch are utter tools.
Not for promising this vaccination thing but cos they lead our government, and our government is a complete farce.
