want to get about £1000 changed in to US dollars, going away on friday, want to get the bext exchange rate/lowest commision etc
I'm near Edinburgh if that makes any difference

I used ICE at waverly station, printed off a wee vouchar online as well which gave me a better rate. :) theres a few comparision websites out there try one of those!

Walk round town, find 3 cheapest, tell them each you'd like a lower rate as it's £1000, let them battle amongst themselves. If you don't have the time, find one that shows competitors rates in the window, check the cheapest 2 and change there, you'll only be losing out on £10 or so!

we got our last from asda, they had the best rate at the time.

check supermarkets and post office rather than the travel agents.

I've found the opposite.... The rates comparison boards are generally accurate like I say. Doesn't take more than 30 mins to nip round a decent sized area and check the rates with pen and paper though.

Post Office or M&S. Don't use the facilities at airports.

I always seem to end getting mine from the Post Office. They're not always the best rates but after taking into consideration the cost of collection ie, car & parking, my local post office works out best.

Probably to late but why do you need so much cash to hand? There's safer options to be honest, like cards etc which is what I use.

I always use the Post Office though if I get money changed.

Who do you bank with?

For example you can use Bank of America free with a Barclays Debit card for interbank rates.

Order online from TravelEx and pick up at the airport is usually the best rate I find, without trekking in to central London to go to some random Bureau de Change.

I always use Travelex and pick it up at the airport. Their rates if you don't pre-order are shocking, but provided you do they guarantee not to be beaten I believe.

i would also suggest that you dont get tricked into buying them debit card things they offer.

we got 2 for new york splitting our money on them.

couldnt make any big purchases on them because they have to have a card with your name on them. lucky for us we had both got paid the weekend we went so we have enough for my macbook and a mulberry bag.

ended up taking the cards back and having 3/4 of the funds removed off them to go put back in the bank.

lesson learned, take a credit card instead.
