I don't believe I or anyone else has the right to choose who lives or dies. Life isn't something which you can check out from if you don't like it.

Why not? But more importantly why should your desires be used to force me to live on in incurable pain and suffering?

I don't agree with suicide regardless of whether someone else helps you and regardless of what other factors there are. In the same way I don't agree with any other form of murder.

So regardless of how poor a quality of life someone is going to have you believe that they should be forced to endure it?

It saddens me greatly that as a society we have now reached a stage where human life is being viewed as disposable.

Not a student of history are you?

Do I really need to try and argue why murder is wrong?

It's far from murder. The person is making a decision about themselves and their life. The person that helps them doesn't have an agenda, their opinion doesn't matter, they are just helping someone fulfil their own wishes.

So you don't think people should have the right over their own life? And you're saying I'm the bad person?

No and yes.

I need to do some work now but I think my views on this are pretty clear.

I don't condone murder in any shape or form and I think it is shameful that anyone can.

so if you ever ( & i genuinley & sincerely hope you don't ) find yourself in the position, of having to make the decision to turn off the life support machine of a loved one, you'll just sit on your hands?.

As I have said already turning off a life support machine is a very different thing to giving someone poison.

I would have no issue (and neither does the law) with that, I wouldn't help them to kill themselves.

I DO need to do some work now though.

Assisted suicide is not murder. It is something else. There is pretty much a gap in UK law where this falls at the moment, and it is being lumped in with murder, but I don't think it's really correct to say that they are the same thing. Whether that "something else" is closer to murder or mercy is the point under debate. You clearly stand on the side of it being closer to murder, but I don't think it can be said to be the same thing.

I'm still not sure whether it's acceptable or not, but I believe it's sufficiently different that it's erroneous to refer to it as murder.

I have a big issue with the BBC broadcasting something like this.

Totally agree - bad taste IMO.

Whether you agree with it or not it just wasn't needed to be shown. The fact that the chap was from where I live just made it harder in a way as we have such good care locally as well.

Technically that's not correct. You can't consent to be murdered in a legally meaningful sense.

There's various crimes that you can't consent to having visited upon you.

I meant morally. I know laws supercede morals, but if I asked someone to kill me, and they did, I wouldn't see that as murder, as I invited the action upon myself.

Much like how if someone goes looking for a fight and gets punched in the face, it's different to someone just being randomly punched in the face by a random.

You've got a disease and, over the years, the 'kill yourself' precentage has gone up to 96%. 96% of people with the disease nowadays choose the option.

You are getting your suicide done privately rather than by the NHS (you deserve the best you think). It's costing £20,000. Non-refundable. You want your whole family to be there .. hence people have travelled from all over for the send-off. Some people, who arn't rich, have even flown over from New Zealand. Everyone has made a massive effort. You even had arranged for you a surprise 'balloon trip', and a load of gifts foistered on you .. everyone has splashed out these last few days.

You were previously at home. Your bedroom has now been cleared out of all it's medical gear. Your bed gone. You're stuff packed away (you helped do it, when you could). Finally your 14 year old son has a room of his own, he's moved in, everything's sorted.

So everyone gathers on the day. You've also had the family gathering the night before. All the tears have been cried. The will has been clarified by an expensive solicitor. All the goodbyes have been said.

The 'doctor' hands you the poison. Everyone waits in silence.

You really think everyone placed in this position, all sufferers, would feel fine with saying 'Actually .. guess what folks .. I've changed my mind'

..

Because if not .. guess what folks .. you're effectively back to coercion. In short, you simply can't stop coercion ... even if no-one says a SINGLE WORD of persuasion .. :/
