I've ended up going to an oxford ball in a couple weeks, with white tie dress code. Needless to say, my wardrobe is somewhat ill equipped. :(

So, had a bit of a google which came up with a couple possibilities I can investigate. But if anyone would like to recommend a decent shop they know which caters to this sort of event somewhere in London, it would be much appreciated. :)

Why? Google will return better options than he's likely to get tonight.
If he has only come up with a couple of possibilities then he is googling the wrong thing :p

I clearly must be :p. Some of these prices are pretty out of this world tbh. Dunno how I feel about shelling out £100 for an evening's worth of wear.

Sorry to let down, but in general suit hire is an expensive business, if you don't want to have to shell out that much, then buy your own suit so you can just use that in the future, and White Tie is pretty much the most expensive one there is.

was going to say £100 for a rental seems completely normal to me... Best you shell out £400 on your own one and make sure you get to a few more events.

Firstly, I would have a look carefully at the invitation because these balls are often 'white tie preferred' (Worcester Ball this year certainly is, which one are you going to?) so you can wear black tie if you like, although be aware that most people don't. Secondly, the ball committee normally sort out some discounts with local retailers such as Moss Bros where you can hire for ~£70 so I would ask whoever got you the ticket for any offers. The other option is to buy your own. I bought one for ~£100 all in from Ebay and I will have worn it twice by the end of my time at Oxford saving me ~£40 or so.

My brother has loads of white tie functions, he says the stuff from Moss Bros is gernerally the best, you are looking at about £100 for the hire

Or don't. Unless you're Scottish, most people look retarded in a kilt.

Something sharp and understated that reeks class is much more impressive.

You may have a point regarding the Scottish requirement but regarding your next points I disagree. Seeing someone in full, proper, Highland dress is a very impressive, regal and special look.
There is nothing understated about white tie.

It's the Christ Church ball. GF has the invitations so I dont know exactly what it says, but I imagine it's the same dress code? Either way, it's a good opportunity to dress up in white tie, which doesnt come up very often for me. :D

Unfortunately I live in London and won't be visiting before next week so I dont think I can take advantage of the local retailers in Oxford.

Cheers for the recommendations, will check out what's available at Moss Bros :)

Not scottish, so don't think it would work for me. Plus I'd be paranoid about sitting down

I'd be more paranoid about eating potentially spicey food and causing backdraft :o

Ring oxford moss bros, you will be able to get fitted at a local moss bros and pay in oxford.

Shame I didn't see this yesterday. Went to Moss Bros in piccadilly circus and spent £107.50 on a white tie rental. Picking up next thursday, returning the following monday. Looking forward to it though!

Cheers again for the recommendations everyone! :)
