They just add to your steam account, although you will probably need to create an account once you start the game.

You have to create an account, it's just a marketing gimic because all they are doing is downloading their own installer which then runs through steam, people are falling for it though!
All these games have been free for a while.

The games are free because they have in-game item shops, looks like valve has taken the F2P MMO model:

Your Steam wallet allows you to purchase items and content in-game to customize your gameplay.
