I'd vote for: I'm in favour provided the person is suffering from a terminal condition or where a persons quality of life is radically diminished.

I can't say I'd support assisted death for anyone who chooses it. However, I'm confident that procedures could be place to ensure that only people who truly wanted and needed this could get the assistance they need.

Do you think Dignitas will accept me if i just print off this thread with a covering letter simply saying "I've had enough":p

I'm not sure about that, it may be mitigation in a court of law should it come to that though...

I'm slightly surprised that the percentages in favour of some level of access to assisted death is quite so high at the moment. I wonder what a poll of the wider UK would show as I'd suspect it's not quite as clear cut as this.

Is anything actually be done in our supposed democratic country? Considering how many people are in support, around the 70% mark. You would expect something to be done about it.

We democratically choose our leaders to make decisions for us. If you want the issue raised in court you need to write to your MP.

That's only a 1000 people, we've polled over half of that survey already.

But as someone else will probably step in and say.
If it's a random selection then it is accurate to within a few percent when scaled up. Not that I nessacerly agree, but it shows this should be properly debated.

Just watched it, found it extremely difficult but worth watching and worth being broadcast. My grandfather died two weeks ago and what he had to go through was terrible, for him and for his family who cared for him until the end.

I fully support assisted suicide for those with terminal illnesses, purely from a humanitarian point of view. Religion should have nothing to do with our laws, its purpose (if it has a purpose) is to inform peoples personal decisions not those of a society.

I do see the risks of course, and undoubtedly a very small minority may get pressured into suicide either passively or much more unlikely actively but I don't think that should stop us doing what is right.

The biggest problem the documentary highlights is how early these people need to take the final act. The older guy may have had months of wonderful experiences with his wife to come but instead he couldn't risk her safety, I think that is the real sadness here.

one final point, britboy, 3500 posts of pure **** please do us all a favour and **** off.

Interestingly enough, we can choose how and when we die for most of our lives, yet when we become old, or suffer from a terminal illness, we lose that choice/freedom.

I think spudbynight is right on some counts. If you allow dignitas you have to allow every form of suicide. Wanting to die by being killed and then eating is the same as wanting to die by going to sweeden and being pumped with poison. Both end results are the same, both parties have died how they wanted and been assisted in their suicide.

I am of the opinion that you can do whatever you want, but so can everyone else. You want to steal someones car, fine, but if they want to kill you in return you better watch out.

First it would cause anarchism, but it should lead to Eden.

:D

just managed to watch this and still stick by my viewpoint that i posted earlier today....this 100% should be part of our laws and its shocking that it isnt. let people die with honour - something history has repeatadly tought us.

If I were mod this is where I would insert a mod challenge.

I say this because of how silly it is, considering its been legal in the Netherlands for over 7 years and over 10 years in Switzerland and this has not even begun to be a problem let alone threads on Netherland or Swiss computing forums complaining about relatives not wanting to die.

It is this kind of misinformation due to either stupidity or because of some alternative evil motivation that causes massive problems for people wanting to advance society using logic.
