Hi everyone,

I'm after a cheap, reliable run around for £500-£1000. Absolute max would be a 1.6 Petrol Engine.

What would you go for?

Thanks!

Why are you limited to a 1.6 engine?

I'd play it by ear, not worry about looking for a specific car and just buy the best example of anything you can find. Unfortunately this end of the car market is a bit of a minefield :(.

Generally try to avoid anything 'Popular'

Any reason for the small engine size? If you're not doing many miles, get something big and comfortable.

For a cheap, reliable runabout I had an Volvo S90 3.0
Best city car ever. The turning circle is only 10m!

That price range, take the best you can find for the money mate...

£200 with tax, mot and four recent tyres...
:D

Toyota Corolla, sold our 1992 one about 4 years ago, but will still see it around, still going strong! 100+ K mileage when we sold it. Fantastically reliable car.

sod the 1.6 get a mk3 mondeo

For a k. No thanks.

Stick with MK2s for this money. Actually an old saloon would be where my money would go. I'd avoid Fiestas, Focuses and the like as everyone looking for a cheap car wants one and as such good ones are usually priced out of the market.

mk3 is a much much better car, i needed a car quick (got job on friday start monday). Spent £1200 on a mk3 estate and nothing has gone amiss at all

EFA ;)

Stick with jap, the last thing you want is loads of repair bills from some old rover/ford.

And the last thing you want is loads of repair bills from something old and Jap?

L series rover engine is an old boat anchor but its pretty bomb proof and the bubble shape Rover isn't that bad for the money.
