Car for £1k

Have you even tried quotes on proper web sites with larger-engined cars?

Don't limit yourself to a cruddy 1.6 if you don't have to.

Insurance isn't an issue at all, I just want something to get from A to B and i don't really see any point paying more to get there in a bigger engined car when something smaller would do just fine.

The way you've got to look at it is everyone and their mum wants something small with an economical engine for a grand. As with anything if their is a great demand prices get pushed up so the cheap, small engine hatchbacks in this price range mean that you'll almost certainly end up paying more for less car in worse condition.

Unloved saloons are the way forward, trust me. Old Vectras, Mondeos, even something a bit more posh like a A4 if you want a bit more of a risk.

You don't need anything bigger, but small cars demand a premium, and you can find yourself much nicer things for a grand than a 1.6 Focus.

Looking at the bigger cars the Rover 75 looks like it could be a decent comfy car, are these rubbish?

Not bad but hard to find for under a grand for a decent one.

The 1.8K series engine has head gasket issues, although once sorted should be done for good.

The 2.5 V6 is brilliant but not too good on fuel, but reliable.

The 2.0 CDT/CDTi is a BMW M47 diesel engine, but this means you won't get one working for a grand.

Also worth noting that the 2.0 V6 returns the same economy as the 2.5 V6, but feels a little strangled.

Auto-Boxes on pre 02 cars also have a tendency to loose reverse gear due to cracking hydro pistons not retaining pressure.

I have to admit to previously owning a 2.0l 75 - was a brilliant car, so smooth, quiet and just eat motorway miles. Very recommended. I miss it.
