2012 M5 Official leaked photos

You know exactly what I mean Fox. I don't 'understand' them, I don't 'get' them, they make 'no sense to me'. Its all the same. If I want supercar performance, I'll buy something that looks supercar-ish. If I want luxury saloon comfort, I'll buy a luxury saloon. The combination of the 2 doesn't make any sense to me. I've never really understood the 'subtle hints' cars that are rocket ship fast but don't look much different to the bottom of the range model.

Its my opinion. Its not right, its not wrong. However, I thought you of all people would appreciate a forum is a discussion of differing views. Put simply, I do not understand the purpose of this car.

Is that the same for Rolls Royce, Bentleys etc?

So if you need a 4 door car you must have a slow diesel?

You are not allowed a fast 4 door car?

4 doors are handy for the kids trip to school, then on the weekends you can use the mad engine and go for a lovely hoon. No need for 2 cars, the M5 does both.

It depends. If you buy one to be driven in, rather than drive yourself, then things like Bentley make a bit more sense.

Its just my viewpoint though.

I think these kind of cars are based a lot on 'untapped potential'. How many M5 drivers ever do 200mph in their cars? Or 0-60 in 4 seconds? Hardly ever. But they like the feeling that they could, if they wanted to. If that's something you like in a car then you will be prepared to drop the extra cash on one. Personally, its not something I look for in a car. Therefore, while I appreciate there are people who have that opinion, I don't, therefore I struggle to understand it, which therefore means I struggle to understand that type of car.

Simple, it's for people who want all the good aspects of a modern luxury saloon/coupe (size for 4 adults, all the mod cons and a not too ostentatious presence on the road) but want a volcano to errupt under their right foot when they want it.

Plus with 4 large adults in a car, having 400+ BHP certaintly makes a difference.

Sports cars are for posing and thrashing around in. These cars are for pretending to be normal, and thrashing around in. Joe public doesn't know the difference between a standard and super version of the average german barge - which is generally a good thing.

This is pretty much the key point. Personally, I would rather have 2 cars. How much is this M5 likely to cost?

The way I see it is that if the car can do 200mph (no doubt restricted to 155) comfortably then doing 70-100 will feel very comfortable while having power on tap should it need it. Power and comfort while doing normal higher speeds appeals to me.
Of course, if you only do short journeys and never need the comfort of a bigger car then it wont appeal to you, you are not even in the target market :)

Put simply, I do not understand the purpose of this car.

To sell to company directors and such like who want a very fast car, with associated 'top of the range' status but without it looking like 19 year olds wet dream. An exceptional car but without over the top 'look at me' styling that seems the norm amongst many high performance cars. Not even necessarily car enthusiasts a lot of the time.

Why run a performance Clio when you could just run a 1.2? ;)

The new 5 is actually a very pretty car, and that M5 looks stunning.

The same could certainly not be said about the E60.

I agree with the first point there. I love the fact that the M5 is not too flashy looking, very under-stated given how capable it will obviously be.

On the second point I don't love the E60, could never really get on with the back of it, but I do love the E61 (which I have) looks much better in touring form. the new one looks good both ways

I drove the M5 and jizzed in my pants
