Hi there,

My brand new PC has got a SDD boot drive and a 1 TB data drive. When I power it on the data drive is "clicking" very loudly and regularly at boot for about 30 seconds, and then stops. The drive does not show up in the BIOS, or in Windows. Is it dead?

Doesn't sound healthy mate... has it worked at all or is this a DOA situation?

I'd put money on this being RMA time I'm afraid...

It's gone. I bought a small 120GB drive for my dads PC not long ago and it was clicking as soon as I plugged it in. It worked fine but HDTune reported tonnes of bad sectors so I sent it back.

Surprised the Caviar Black is duff. There very reliable drives. Maybe it got battered in transit, how was the packaging?

Owel.... anyway, buy a Samsung F3 to replace it. Just as quick and a fair bit cheaper :)

I wouldn't buy a samsung drive again. Noisy as hell in my experience. The WD blacks i've got are really quiet, check the drives smart data it is quite possibly just moving the heads as it powers up, or needs an RMA

Perhaps you just got a bad one... or even an older model. The new Samsung models are very quiet and efficient. I've installed something like twenty of the F3's 1TB in various systems and all have been quiet. As quiet as a 7200RPM drive can get anyway.

I've also used the blacks, there great drives. Just not worth the premium IMO.
