There was a story yesterday about a statement by the American Astronomical Society about unusual solar weather, and how it could mean a possible Maunder Minimum and non-anthropogenic global COOLING.

The story has been picked up now by every news outlet EXCEPT the BBC lol. Not hidden away in sci/tech... nothing. Could it be because it contradicts their overtly biased man-made global warming agenda?

Come on let's hear your excuses.

Could just mean they're not a very good at their jobs, rather than having some secret agenda. Just saying. Their science tech news isn't all that anyway in my opinion.

Troll alert. Abandon thread!

What may be the science story of the century is breaking this evening, as heavyweight US solar physicists announce that the Sun appears to be headed into a lengthy spell of low activity, which could mean that the Earth – far from facing a global warming problem – is actually headed into a mini Ice Age.

The announcement made on 14 June (18:00 UK time) comes from scientists at the US National Solar Observatory (NSO) and US Air Force Research Laboratory. Three different analyses of the Sun's recent behaviour all indicate that a period of unusually low solar activity may be about to begin.

I know Kwerk hasn't done himself any favors in the past, but his post is perfectly valid. Mainstream media outlets do have their own agendas you know - even the Beeb.

Maybe he should have tried SC...

Well for starters that's not true, the sun is overdue for some pretty excessive sunspot activity. That may be the cause of a whole host of new problems, but it's got little to go with climate change.

But then, why should i bother with you, kwerk?

So a maunder minimum causing the gulf stream to shut down would have little to do with climate change?

So the Sun has been getting less and less active over the past few cycles of sunspots, and despite that there has been a trend of warming, and no there is a chance of the sun not producing any sunspots which *may* have a cooling effect on the earth's climate, this somehow proves that AGW isn't real? Wtf?

Yes as we have been reaching the solar MAXIMUM. If you bothered to read the articles you'd see it says the next maximum looks to be delayed for decades. That means cooling from now on. Remember last winter? Imagine that but worse for the next couple of decades. Add in more Russian heat waves and China/Pakistan flooding, and 30-60 fewer crop growing days as the jetstream is disrupted.

In simpler terms we are approaching the solar maximum in 2013. We're still on the up swing, but after that we'll be on the down swing. They cycle about every 11 years. The experts have announced the next cycle is not starting up like it should. If it doesn't get enough 'momentum' from the current weak cycle it might not start at all. That means we'll be on the minimum for a prolonged period. the last time it happened the Thames would regularly freeze over and glaciers swept away towns.
