V Reg car showing as 2001 registered

Well what I thought was the VIN isn't. its a plate in german on the right inner wing, it does have a 17 digit number but it has a 10 at the end which would mean it would be manufactured in 2010 according to motoverse vin checker. Where else could the actual VIN be?

Sounds like an import to me, a lot of BMW's were imported around this time because of the exchange rates at the time!

So assuming its an import, how do I get the V5 changed to the correct year or can't I? If Its imported in 2002, doesn't the V5 need changed from an insurance point of view?

do a car check on it at the dvla.... if it is imported you will have something like this... Taken from my car:

Go to the following link and click vehicle enquiry down the left

http://www.taxdisc.direct.gov.uk

The enquiry is complete

The vehicle details for B6 XBY are:

Date of Liability 01 10 2011
Date of First Registration with DVLA 15 11 2006
Date of First Registration 05 12 2001
Year of Manufacture 2001
Cylinder Capacity (cc) 3200CC
CO2 Emissions 265g/Km
Fuel Type Petrol
Export Marker Not Applicable
Vehicle Status Licence Not Due
Vehicle Colour BLACK
Vehicle Type Approval M1

Vehicle Excise Duty Rate for vehicle
6 Months Rate £143.00
12 Months Rate £260.00

Also the V5 will have 2 registration dates on it. One for uk and one for elsewhere.

I just looked on ebay, the e36 bmw compacts seem to have had a facelift around the 2001-2002 era, and I have a very basic 1999 model so its looking more likely someone has bought one from germany and then registered it in 2001. My only concern now is insurance etc as I had to insure it as a 2001 car as thats what it said on the V5. Is there ANY way of getting this changed back to a 1999 (which it is)

Vince, it doesn't have anything like that.

Just

But it can't be a 2001 as its a V plated car. Hmm.

Strange mine has had a few personal plates in its life one from me and the previous owner, it also started life in jersey and was moved to here in 2006 (same owner) so has been out and about - I would have thought that its some kind of error on the V5.

Cant you go down to the DVLA office and ask?

So the possibility remains that someone has had it imported it and registered it as a 2001 car ? That would explain why it was a V reg car (not new enough for a 2001 car)
Can't go down DVLA office as its not exactly local. Good 60 mile drive.

Yes but it says on the V5 , date of first registration 2001
What am I meant to think?
I know its a 99 plate car.

That it was first registered in 2001, not that it was manufactured in 2001.

To clarify, I dug out the v5 for an import. On the front of the booklet under Section 3 Special Notes, it will say
1.VEHICLE WAS REGISTERED/USED OVERSEAS. DECLARED MANUFACTURED XXXX

A UK market car will simply say
1. DECLARED NEW AT FIRST REGISTRATION.

Ok, On the first page, Special notes it says
1 WAS REGISTERED.USED OVERSEAS, DECLARED MANUFACTURED 1999

Next Page, Vehicle details. It says its first date of registration is 2001
Body type Saloon

Everything else seems OK. As well as the VIN number, which is correct.

So basically the only error I can see is them putting the body type as saloon instead of Compact.

Where does this leave me Insurance wise? Should I be insuring it as a 2001 BMW 316i Saloon? When it clearly is a 99 Compact. Does anyone know what needs to be done here? Many thanks guys
