EA to unveil Origin

I understand EA and other companies not liking the 30% or whatever Steam takes from them, but why don't they remove their games from retail as well then? Retail takes considerably more than 30% away.

Because they can't digitally distribute console games and retailers have them by the short and curlies there.

The 1 thing we can all be happy about is that once that does happen, we can laugh at Game when they suddenly lose 90% of there business and all the screwing people over they've done over the years comes back to bite them in the ass.

fro m the bf3 thread fun fact about origin

Someone posted this on the Steam forums - it's from the Origin help section, I thought some of you might find it interesting.

"QUESTION

I've received an error message on Origin, what does the error mean?

ANSWER

You may receive one of the following error messages if you have reached the maximum amount of times your game can be downloaded through Origin:

For security reasons, you are allowed # concurrently active licenses. This limit has been reached. Please wait until one of the other licenses auto-expires, then try again.
License response error: '78008,Max machine lifetime entitlement met:#
Error: 10000:78008

Every time the download button is clicked, a download count will be added to your lifetime total. If you have installed your game via Origin on more than three computers within a ten day period, you will need to wait until the first installation expires.

Note: Re-installing your operating system, or interrupting a current download, will count as a new computer installation.

If you have reached your download limit, click Contact Us and include your account name, the title of the file or game you are downloading, and a brief description of the issue."

interrupting a download counts as a new computer installation and you only get 3???

Sorry but the amount of times things have happens and I've had to interrupt a download that's ****ing ridiculous.

Stupid move from EA - Personally, I don't buy physical copies any more, and the only place online I buy from is Steam - So they've lost my potential purchase there.

There is no point in having two game distribution platforms - Steam has become too big to compete with... It's like when Microsoft (or I guess they still are) tried to compete with Google with their own search engine, Bing. Pointless.

The sad thing is - I am really going to want to play Battlefield 3 - But I suspect it will be sold on "Origin" and if you buy a physical copy, you won't be able to play unless you play through Origin first :(

Yep. Cancelled my pre-order. I was only buying it for the SP anyway and i've never been even slightly tempted to play an EA game before, so i definately won't be in future.

I was looking forward to BF3 and Mass Effect 3 but if they don't appear on Steam I won't be buying them. Some people may see this as a stupid point of view and that's fair enough but I like having all my games easily accessible through Steam and have no interest in having multiple accounts and clients just to play games.

It's not the first time I've voted with my wallet and most likely won't be the last, only trouble is EA won't even notice that they've lost a sale unless everyone does the same and frankly what are the chances of that?

I suppose it was only a matter of time before Valves dominance of the download market resulted in something like this happening, but still it's disappointing.

I'm with you. My life isn't so dominated by games that I can't say no when I think publishers are being dicks.

Update on the Crysis 2 situation @ IGN

http://uk.pc.ign.com/articles/117/1176517p1.html

Electronic Arts' new downloadble service, Origin, will host exclusive PC digital copies of games such as Star Wars: The Old Republic and Battlefield 3. Crysis 2, released earlier this year, was pulled from Valve's digital games service Steam yesterday.

EA has stated the game's removal was due to an agreement between Crytek and another download service, not a decision by the publisher.

Posted below is EA's statement sent to IGN:

It's unfortunate that Steam has removed Crysis 2 from their service. This was not an EA decision or the result of any action by EA.

Steam has imposed a set of business terms for developers hoping to sell content on that service – many of which are not imposed by other online game services. Unfortunately, Crytek has an agreement with another download service which violates the new rules from Steam and resulted in its expulsion of Crysis 2 from Steam.

Crysis 2 continues to be available on several other download services including Origin.com.

IGN has contacted Valve for comment.

Origin's prices are as bad as Steam's.:D

I'm afraid hardcore digital download customers really only have themselves to blame for this inevitable outcome. They willingly pay above the odds for new titles for the apparent convenience of 'getting it now'. It was surely only a matter of time before the real money grabbing heavyweights in the gaming world got in on the action. How long till Activision join the party?

I'll probably end up using the Origin client at some point, but I will not buy direct from EA, I'll let the retailers take their cut first. :p

Hopefully a few more will get in on the act and ebb away at Steam's overcharging.

they're charging even more than steam.

the publisher (ie in this case EA) sets the price on steam, so now they have their own system they're still setting the price.

Why on earth would it be lower now they have zero competition?

Steam needs to be non-profit, that would sort everything in one fell swoop. I dont want half a dozen download services running on my machine.

Another good thing being chewed up on the PC.

Very interesting, I thought it was a bit odd that it was just Crysis 2 that got removed. Shame that this will be completely overlooked in this thread/forum and the complaints will continue flooding... :/

While I have no desire to use Origin over steam, I'm actually pleasantly surprised that the majority of games from the last few years I've got on Steam can be seamlessly activated on Origin. Whilst, I'm sure Steam are going no-where, I'm never going to say no to another source for a title I own.

i'm happy enough - all my EA games from the past are now in my Origin Library and I use Raptr as a one shop client so win win here for me

Assuming EA is being truthful when it claims it had nothing to do with the removal of Crysis 2 from Steam, then perhaps it's not all bad. Although the fact that BF3 is available to pre-order pretty much everywhere but Steam doesn't look so good for future EA titles appearing there, but I'll reserve judgement until it's proven one way or the other.

I'm sure they'll want to push Origin going forward, but I think they'd have more too loose than gain by lying about this. All it would take is for one of the third parties involved to push a contradicting story and it would go from bad to worse for EA very quickly.

The difference with Steam and a lot of other Digital Download places is Steam don't sell keys, which is why I presume they're not stocking BF3 (providing that as most people suspect it will require activation on Origin), D2D and the like are more than happy to just flog you a key that you use as a one off, with another client.

It's hard for me to have a problem with requiring activation through their own service when Blizzard and Valve have been doing it for years already. Tbh though, I'd rather have one centralised point for games rather than several different clients. It's not the end of the world for me though.
