one for my fellow BBC haters

Ok, so over 300 odd years of data allows us to predict what the sun (age about 4.57 billion years) is going to do?

I know they are scientists, but really!?

Ok so over 300 years of the study of the human body that allow us to diagnose illnesses and treat them ( humans have existed for half a million years).

I know they are doctors, but really!?

Ah well, I've been less and less enthusiastic about the BBC website recently, this is just another failure to add to the long list.

Interesting predictions - but only time will tell - maybe they decided to ignore it, or maybe they decided that it might not be true so they might not bother reporting it... but then again that never stopped them in the past. I actually just assume it is incompetence though.

Its been known for ages that 2012 would be the start of global cooling.
I imagine the BBC would report it when the temperatures do actually change

I was implying that predicting sun spot activity is probably as easy as prediciting the long range weather forcast. ;)

Haha and some long range forecasts actually use sunspot activity as a guide to the future weather - just ask Piers Cobryn :D

I still think that the Sun's solar / sunspot cycles are important and should be taken into account (if possible), but there are just too many variables. Still I'm waiting for the solus maximus decimus meridius (hey not bad at Latin) around 2013, but don't worry it'll be cooler by the lake :D

Never underestimate the Sun ;) its half way through its life cycle as a star, so a mid-life crysis is on the cards at some time, give or take 100,000 years...

Kwerk troll thread #4352...

Troll alert. Abandon thread!

No chance, its a conspiracy of the highest order!

LOL

In simpler terms we are approaching the solar maximum in 2013. We're still on the up swing, but after that we'll be on the down swing. They cycle about every 11 years. The experts have announced the next cycle is not starting up like it should. If it doesn't get enough 'momentum' from the current weak cycle it might not start at all. That means we'll be on the minimum for a prolonged period. the last time it happened the Thames would regularly freeze over and glaciers swept away towns.

Which both the scientists in question and the less sensationalist of the media outlets you quoted have said won't happen. Did you not read your own links or did you just hope nobody else would?

The effects on the Earth's climate are less certain, however -- climatologists don't enough data to determine how strongly solar-caused global cooling would affect anthropogenic climate change. Previous decade-long swings in solar activity have had little or no impact on temperatures or other climate indicators.

Given the dramatic rate at which emissions are increasing at the moment, we're unlikely to be skating on the Thames in the near future. But if solar activity drops significantly and stays there for several decades, the possibility exists that the worst effects of anthropogenic climate change could be delayed. That's a big "if", and not one that humanity can rely on.

Three separate studies and the US air force research lab are saying it is happening. That's what the story is, the discussion and recognition of it at the AAS meeting and the statements they released.

“We expected to see the start of the zonal flow for Cycle 25 by now,” Hill explained, “but we see no sign of it. This indicates that the start of Cycle 25 may be delayed to 2021 or 2022, or may not happen at all.”

err, I've heard three BBC news buletins on the radio this morning and all have covered the story. Maybe, just maybe Kwerk they wanted to check the validity of the findings with other scientific research groups before reporting.

Now stop trolling and become a productive human being instead.
