News on Southern Islands and Nvidia Kepler

We really don't need them. We have games coming out in Nov like Skyrim which is DX9. Take away the few DX11 games actually worth playing, there's absolutely no need for SI or Kepler any time soon.

True, but they'll keep pushing new cards and people will keep buying them. Once you've bought a card then unless you buy another AMD or Nvidia make naff all. The only way they stay in business is by making new stuff to buy.

Besides if they keep making new and more powerful cards then there's a hope the PS4 and Xbox <insert number higher than 360> will have very powerful cards which allows decent PC ports.

I like the sound of Kepler...

The kepler info is always so widely misquoted, the info direct from Nvidia's OWN slides is that Kepler is supposed to have closer to 3x the performance in double precision performance, over a 480gtx. Moving from one process to a slower process will roughly end up giving you 2x the performance per watt anyway, and double precision has no bearing on single precision performance, and gaming is ALL single precision. Basically the info that Kepler will have higher performance per watt translates into exactly no indication of actual performance at all.

DX9 or 11 makes literally NO DIFFERENCE in terms of performance, AT ALL, to anything. DX11 often provides improved performance for exactly the same visual effects, but the improved performance is often used to add more effects, but not always.

Texture design, actual design/style, quality of model building and animation, all those things have massively more impact in how a game looks and the power it requires, than what DX version it is.

Yes theres games out there that push a single top end gpu now at max settings at 1920x1080 res, theres LOADS of games that have massive trouble with performance at eyefinity/Nvidia surround, 3d performance right now on top end sli/xfire setups.

Just because you don't need more performance, doesn't mean someone else doesn't.

Just because one game coming out this year is DX9 doesn't mean another DX11 game won't come out that will bring a quad sli 580gtx rig to its knee's at high res.

AMD's Southern Islands architecture is based on the VLIW4 design that was introduced together with the Radeon HD 6900 series graphics cards, but the smaller manufacturing process should enable the company to pack more shader processors inside their graphics cores.

This part is not true. Apparently the author did not read the keynotes of the AMD Fusion Developer Summit yesterday.

Did it say SI was ditching the VLIW4 design? from what I remember the 6900's where always thought of as a next gen design without the die shrink.

I thought they just said Trinity's GPU side would not involve the VLIW4 design.

This is frustrating. I'm waiting for a little bit on information about these new graphics cards so i can decide if I upgrade or now or wait for new cards. Hope the rumours than AMD are releasing some news soon.

Sorry today's news says it's still gonna be VLIW4. Yesterday we saw slides like this:
