Because he is 16 and for him it will change his life, albeit temporarily? Stop being a tube.

I just think you should put off working full time for as long as you can. There's always opportunities for good people and I don't think you should be any rush to start working when you don't need to.

That being said, OPs CV is good, reads well, and if you want to work through the summer then do it; it is a nice offer. But it's not as though you going to dramatically hold up your career or life by not doing it.

Good for you, go for it.

Pray to allah and all his little pixies that they aren't putting you near any production systems though.

16? Money? Bite his hand off and slap yourself over the head for even thinking of a negative.

At 16 if I had a nice bit of cash (you'll not have many outgoings!) it would pay for driving lessons and a run-around and that gives you more freedom. It also pays for a few good nights out with mates!

I can see no negatives.

Seems like a great opportunity to me but what I'm really struggling to understand is why a consultancy that does database work for investment banks wants to bring in a 16 year old with no experience of SQL (and little with software in general) for 2 months. By the time you've been trained, you'll have left!

Not looking to knock your experience as at 16 I'd never touched SQL either, but I'd have said a firm that is providing FULL training on database work probably wants somebody to stick around a bit longer than that.

yeh this confused me too, I don't understand why they would want a 16 year old... :/ must have their reasons tho..

You're a lucky guy. I'll be starting my placement in Canary Wharf in a few weeks. If you need some help/advice/anything you're welcome to give me a shout, although SQL isn't my forte.

Good luck!

I know many university students (myself included) that would do terrible terrible things to get an summer placement in canary wharf.

To get offered one at 16 is an incredible opportunity. As other have said

Bite. His. Hand. Off.

ok fair enough, looks like i will be taking it/trying for it :D

one more question for everyone, as i said in the first post.... 'salary is negotiable'

how much can i reasonably expect to get paid? I literally have no idea on this....

cheers

Dam right I've just graduated and would snap his arm off for the experience as it's what employers want

This is very true. I missed out at the last stage when I went for an internship. Internships can be very hard to get, including a recruitment process as rigorous as (i.e. identical to) the process that final year students go through to get graduate positions.

The summer interns were on £36K pro-rata at the place I used to be at.
They were computer science students at uni, so you won't be on that much - but I reckon asking for £20K pro-rated for the summer you'll be there wouldn't be a bad place to start at.

20k?! sorry pro rated?

so I could earn 20k for this summer, working full time?! 20k! thats 20,000!

so many pennies!

You'd be mad to say no. An opportunity in IT at your age is hard to come by for graduates let alone school kids.

No, I meant it would be the equivalent of a £20K annual salary, so if you were there for 3 months you would earn £5K.

You could always ask for more than that, but I would err on the side of caution as it's a great opportunity and I reckon they probably wouldn't blink at you asking for that.

Not quite pro rata means that the given sum would be what you would be paid if you worked full time for the full year, you would get a percentage of this as you won't be working for the full year.

ahh ok i see, still cant complain about 5k! Well I really don't know what to expect tbh, so say i worked from Beginning of july, to beginning of september, what would the minimum i should be asking for be?
