Importing a product into the UK for sale?

ok, then it will be relatively easy, if you are buy just a few and they are shipping them in a jiffy bag or small box

just do your maths and add on the VAT and delivery costs to your item so you know exactly what they will cost you

buy some from the supplier and they will arrange the shipping, the courier will arrange the VAT payments once they arrive.

then sell them.

if it works, buy some more and rinse and repeat

keep records of all your costs and sales

The item is pocket sized and doesn't weigh much at all. They will be coming from the US. The price per unit there is about $12.

I was just looking for advice, I can see 4 utterly retarded questions asked in the first 2 pages..

Most expensive condom ever. :p

So the VAT would be 20%? I guess the product does come under the Toy category, someone mentioned previously that the toy importing duty is 3.5%?

Appreciate the information !

Most expensive condom ever. :p

But it's bacon flavoured!

(Note: I am not intending to sell bacon flavoured condoms)

The drop down menus on that website are completely fudged for me. You enter the name of the product, it pre-selects a category and you can't get any further until you select a difference category. I pressed on the contact us link to tell them that their website was ****, and nothing happened.

I would have though that was a pretty good definition of a buisness.

Maybe you should PM MikeHiow for more buisness advice;)

Don't do this :D.

Had a quick research and it may be duty free now. But it's difficult to really know without more information, e.g. if it's an electronic toy then it could be classified differently and mean you have to pay duty. Have a gander at the UK tariff and see as you know exactly what it is!

for the small cost and number of items your are buying

just go for it, youll soon find out if there is a duty on the item when it arrives.

budget an extra 3-4% on your costs just incase

but if you are as confident as you sound that your item will sell , just go for it

Using that duty calculator, these are the results I got:

Total customs value: £18.64
Import duty: £0.00
Import VAT: £0.00
Total import duty & VAT due: £0.00
Total landed cost: £18.64 at USD/GBP exchange rate of 0.6213

Not really sure what it means? I put in the correct item value, shipping from US to UK, shipping cost etc.

Is that per unit?? Can't be! Also it's not electronic.

Speak to your local Chamber of Commerce. In Scotland we have an organisation called Business Gateway that is set up to give advice on things like this but I have no idea what the equivalent would be in England so the chamber would be my first port of call.

Ok, pretended I was buying 10 at $10 value:

Total customs value: £74.56
Import duty: £0.00
Import VAT: £14.91
Total import duty & VAT due: £14.91
Total landed cost: £89.47 at USD/GBP exchange rate of 0.6213

So basically if I buy 10 thats how much VAT I'd be paying on them? £89.47?
