It's just been confirmed on the BBC news television programme that this train contract is now being moved to Germany - a massive 3 billion pound project the UK sorely needed. Thousands of jobs down the drain, simply to save a few bob presumably.

Whatever happened to Osbourne saying UK manufacturing will be supported? Moving £3 billion contracts to Germany is like taking a **** in the face of a nation already hard up and sorely needing work.

Way to go.

If a UK company is able to build something to the required spec in the time frame, considering how people are suffering at the moment .. it is a bit of a slap to take it abroad :(

Combined with a Tory MP's comments about Disabled people should work for below min wage to make themselves more attractive to employers, and its clear to see they are trying really hard to gain more support at the moment! :p

Why buy an inferior product just because it's British?

You should probably know that British trains are made to a high standard. The French make their own trains, the Spanish make their own trains, The Germans make their own trains, but the British now apparently doesn't want to, even though it would benefit itself massively.

You forget the Tories made vital promises to keep UK manufacturing going; instead our competitive British trains are being sidelined for on-par German trains, and it has a massive impact on local economy.

I know this is a pro-Tory forum but Jesus Christ you are allowed to criticise them every now and then. This is just a remarkably stupid thing to do, moving a £3b contract overseas. We need that contract, and the trains would have been to a very high standard.

Unfortunately the UK can't compete with the combination of Teutonic engineering and Jewish blood and tears - hard to argue with that really.

"we want the words made in Britain, created in Britain, designed in Britain, [and] invented in Britain to drive our nation forward"

Might be coming back to bite Georgie boy in the behind now.

so you want the government to rig a fair and open bidding process?

No I want them to put their own country first. Make our goddamn trains in our goddamn country to help our goddamn people.

And people wonder why we're going down the drainage. There's just no pride or interest in this nation anymore.

yeah it's not like the uk industry's past with government contracts is full of late and massively over budget projects.

But it's an open contract make the best offer and have the capability you get it don't and you don't.

otherwise why not just nationalize the manufacture and use it for all government contracts regardless of suitability if you're just going to toss out the criteria.

It doesn't have to be black or white though, there is no reason that a weighting couldn't be given to local industry, especially if they are out-priced because of something like the exchange rate which is partly government policy anyway.

It would also mean that even if it was out-sourced, it would be an even better deal as the foreign company would be bidding low enough to overcome the in-built preference towards using local industry.

What a great argument for keeping Britain crap, I salute you Sir. ;)

Instead of throwing our money away, lets invest in our industries and mix the economy to make competition viable.

Foreign contractors hardly have a brilliant reputation either in terms of delivery time and budget.

You know we can find a middle ground though - and awarding this gigantic contract overseas definitely isn't it! I am nowhere near saying we should aware all contracts to within the UK - I am very aware that protectionism is bad but you must recognize that we are in a time where the nation sorely needs to give some output, some manufacturing. It needs jobs. We don't make bad trains, far from it!

We can't keep relying on imports, it's an incredibly bad idea and weakens the economy even further when used to excess.

That's not a middle ground at all is it?

that's just saying if it;s big it must be done in britian.

just the big contracts then?

To maximise the problems.

Apparently we don't make good bids though.

My latest Doris told me this earlier as she works there. Looks like she'll be looking for a new man as well as a new job now then.
