Now i have looked on the OC site and cant see any radeon cards above a 5770 & 6450 that are passively cooled. Are they any higher performance cards than these that are passively cooled that would be decent for 1080p gaming on my media center PC??

I remembered seeing a passive card recently and thinking wow that's quite a quick card, I then spent 15minutes looking for a passive gtx 460. Turns out it was a 6850 which is a bit faster than those 2 cards and is also Radeon as you asked :P Its the "SCS3" by Powercolor.

Really, did you find the 6850 in stock anywhere in the UK?

Also found a 6770 by Gigabyte that is passive....but again find it hard to find stock anywhere

you can try buying straight from powercolour but they have really really horrendous UK RMA.

Any particular reason you need passive? I would just go for a silent card

I spied a new contender back in April and posted it here, but I haven't seen them available anywhere since. They were officially released on 19th May I believe, but I can't find any for sale yet. The next fastest would be the 5770 or similar cards.

As above, maybe just something very quiet would be better for you. Look for GPUs with biggest fan diameter possible, and top-down coolers rather than blower exhaust type as they tend to be quieter.

You could get a card eg 6850 and fit an aftermarket cooler to it.

What exactly is your budget?

My budget...no more than £100 really, as its only for the media centre PC so wont be massively used, ill only be gaming at 1080p on it, so just for PC gaming where id like to sit down on the sofa and play with a pad, so not afrer anything top of the range just something that will play majority of games well

i suggest getting a decent older card, and fitting an aftermarket passive cooler to it

i got a 4870 and ive been playing crysis 2 at 1080p no problem and that was a lot less than £100 :)

I would say not really. Go for the 5830. My 5850 was literally silent unless it was at 100% which it never reached unless I did it manually through afterburner.

Even at 100% I could only just hear it.

The 5830 is louder though, as it's basically the same power output and such as a 5870.

OP, there's a certain place doing 5750 1GB cards for £48 new. Get one of those and a whacking great cooler for it (Accelero S1) then if that's not quite enough, cable tie a really low rpm 120mm fan to it. Total cost = <£70, and it'll be either silent, or so close the HDD will be louder. Will be capable enough for sofa-playing.

more than £100 + aftermarket passive cooler

i think a 5770 on offer with a passive cooler will be fine for a media pc with occasional gaming :)

Marvin, the 5830 is louder? I thought it was a downclocked 5850 with less cores/shaders?

Panyan, I was recommending the 5839 without an aftermarket cooler in it as IMO it doesn't need one as it's already near silent.

It sort of is, but somehow the power draw is higher (check out the original reviews for it), so using the same cooler as on a 5850, the 5850 will be slightly quieter/cooler.

I don't know what the XFX one OCUK have is like as far as noise and temperatures though. It doesn't have a blower fan, which is good.

Would this place be the same name as what happened to the sun yesterday at approx 21:30 time??

That'll be the one. Though I thought it was the moon?
