Is Nokia on the way out?

Nokia had a fairly big advertising campaign for the N8 not that long ago, it was a guy filming a rollercoaster.

Still being played and also seen a few billboards of the N8 ad.

It will be a shame if Nokia goes under as their handsets are very nicely built, its just their OS that was competely turd like...isnt Nokia lookinbg at going WP7 or something???...that might get them back into the game so to speak.

tbh the only thing they need to change is OS.. i did not buy a nokia this time only because of the OS i had the 5530 before and it was DEAD at every aspect.. camera rubbish, net rubbish, apps/games? forget.. basically they need to get android in.. in my eyes that would have been a better choice as W7 is still an "umh" in my eyes..

the rumour is google wouldn't give them any leeway on android, so they took the microsoft dollars and ran! strange considering elop is ex-microsoft eh!

We don't need another Android OEM.

Stupid OS, and retarded hardware specs on their flagship of a while ago, the N97:

1: **** build quality, camera slider damages plastic, screen locker can fall off and buggy, on mine the touchscreen got severed from the normal screen.
2: Extremely buggy release firmware, still crappy firmware now 2 years later. BT carkit issues on quick discon-connects, locking up, app crashing, slow, etc...
3: Crappy cpu, 600 mhz crappy cpu in a flagship model, come on, sure symbian is slow, but it was also partly because of the rubbish cpu!
4: insufficient ram/phone memory ( but enough mass memory luckily).
5: ****load of crappy apps and widgets stuck on that slow an already slow phone down.

I do miss it being able to resist falling a lot, moist/mild water, the FM transmitter (!!!!) and the great keyboard, the keyboard is far nicer than the crappy BB keyboards or the one on the Desire Z.

But, it is usable, it has whatsapp (very important), spotify and good satnav with maps on the mass memory: garmin navigation ( unlike google maps which needs internet so crap/useless/extremely expensive for abroad).

Afraid I agree though, Iphone and Adnroid is FAR nicer, I don't really have a high opinion of windows mobile or BB's either... Morons should have used android, they are doomed also with winmob imho.

Yes we do, Samsung, HTC and LG don't make high enough spec phones, where's the FM transmitter, what's with the crappy low ammount of memory, they could make the screens a tad more resistant so they don't crack so easily after falling...

I'm a nokia fanboy. If I had the money now or contract renewal now I'd get the samsung gs2. I'm waiting too see what wp7 phones they bring out before my renewal in feb. off topic my sister drowned her N8 in a mug of tea today! lol and nokia thought it clever to put a sealed battery compartment!

The market for fm transmitters is small, people aren't interested in them. Most of the high end android phones have hard glass, and the high end phones have much more memory than iphones. Part of Nokias problem is features they thought people wanted they didn't...and the fact that they have been so slow to react recently with abysmal launch schedules...

I disagree, the buggyness/lack of testing/slowness/unstability of how they work is their problem, nothing more, if I could have my N97 back with a 1.2ghz dual core cpu and android, I'd have it over the SGS2...

I wonder if the settlement with Apple will go some way to helping Nokia through this tough patch...not heard details but imagine its not huge amounts.

So now Microsoft buy Nokia = Profit from Android + Profit from iPhone + Profit from WP7/8

and relax!

different software/ different hardware. so a totally different phone?

anyhoo, nokias problems surely stem from the fact that even though their wp7 phones may not (rumour i read off anandtechs forums) be ready till late 2012/early 2013, they announced it a few months back

should have kept their mouths shut till much nearer the time

Well to bust that myth right there Nokia originally announced (and very recently reannounced) that there will be at least WP7 Nokia before the end of this year, with a number being released next summer... Not really late 2012/early 2013.:p

will it be wp7 on their current extremely low end hardware though? aka, a rush job? :D

I think they realise they have to impress with their first release, if they don't it could cause problems for them selling in the future.

(I hope so anyway, because I'm one of those people waiting for a Nokia WP7 phone) :P

It can't be. WP7 only supports Qualcomm chipsets. Nokia doesn't manufacturer Qualcomm-based phones at the moment, so it'll have to be a totally new product.

personally, i'm hoping nokia goes both routes (like HTC) and makes kick ass phones for android and wp7 in time. more choice is always good right?

more than that, (kinda OT), anyone know what the hell is going on with HP and palm? i mean, where are the webOS phones?

i was hoping by now that we'd have kickass webOS phones out which would force both apple and google to innovate and improve the OS a bit more

These are the minimum requirements for wp7 so theyll have to do use another os for low end phones (which iirc will still be symbian for the near future)

Supposedly July 21st in US, so shouldn't be much later over here.

oh and people exaggerating loads about how much trouble nokia is in. they're not going to be in a situation where they're likely to go under for a long time yet, and if they ever are in that situation another company will just buy them out (the patents alone would be worth a lot)

it's not that I think they'll go under, but I don't think you realise what a mess they're in. Sales tanking quickly, carriers losing interest, not one product launch on time in years...
However, I really do expect someone to buy them, and sooner rather than later...and for a silly amount. Maybe Microsoft?

If analysts are correct, this quarter will be Nokia's first loss in 15 years. They're sitting a quite a big reserve of cash and they're now receiving money from both Apple and Microsoft. They could stop making phones tomorrow and still stay afloat for a number of years.

But they are under intense pressure if they want to retain their position as the mobile phone manufacturer. It's a good chance that they could become another Motorola or Sony Ericsson, with no real hope of ever deciding on their own future again.
