Aww, cuuutttteeeee...

Videos like this show how actions that some might like to classify as 'human' are not exclusive to us! I also wonder whether orangutangs could be considered to be more intelligent than people with certain mental problems, and where that should put us in terms of considering orangutangs as people (and thus offering them the same 'human rights' that say, an elderly person in late stages of dementure would be offered) rather than animals... A line that is not quite as clear cut as might first be imagined imo.

(edit: Certainly not for this woman: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/south_asia/4443825.stm )

Although, thinking about it there probably wouldn't be much difference in how we treated them other than in pure legal ways... Or then again there might be, and maybe better protections in their habitat, or more stringent conditions on how they would be kept in zoos... Although that seems unlikely considering that many humans do not get basic rights, and some would say that that is more important than saving orangutangs from loss of habitat or whatever.

That's nothing, last time I was at Chester Zoo I saw a chimpanzee leg it across the enclosure and throw a big stick at a noisy quacking duck.

lets face it he killed and ate it later.

With any luck in that order.

Well maybe he did, but beforehand there was curiosity, and investigation... And I doubt that it was actually very hungry, as if it was then it would just have eaten the bird straight off, which would imply that hunger wasn't the only reason he picked the bird up. Anyway, if I was in some cage in a zoo or something and some poorly duckling came by, I can imagine doing a similar sort of thing, and subsequently eating the thing if I thought it was worth it once the novelty had worn off a bit, or it had died on its own...
