So, as the title says my number plates were stolen.

I called the police and got a crime number. but have no idea what to do next. I guess I'm not allowed to drive it around and need to get new plates.

Does anyone know where I get them or what I need to take with me to get them. Also, how much do they cost?

Any advise is appreciated.

The main problem I see is that most of the vehicle documents are at home (I'm currently at uni) so if I need any of them to get a new number plate that could be a problem.

You'll need your V5 and proof of address, anyone or anywhere can do them really. Garages, dealers, Halfords etc.....

I'd be tempted to order a set online, loads of websites off silly show plates but just find a website that offers plates that look exactly like real ones, it'll say in the small print must not be used on the road but they will look fine and only be like £15 delivered. Use them for a bit and when you get a chance have some proper ones made if you feel the need.

Hmm, I could get some cheap plates online then, until I go home where the documents are and then I could get a proper set from a garage.

Thanks.

Sit back & await a visit from the plod once your stolen plates are used for some crime or other.

Legal plates can be had online, no need for getting a second set, you can pay next day and you'll have them Tuesday.

Expect some speeding tickets, bilking accusations and maybe a visit from plod when they start using them for naughty stuff.

Not entirely practical but declare your car SORN then they will get knicked through ANPRN :D

What, and they'll get a £50 fine and 6 points on their already revoked license? ;) :p

Yup this is what happened to me. I reported my plates stolen, the next day the Police turn up to say they had been used on a brown Ford Sierra which stole a tank full of petrol from a local garage. The thieves were kind enough to dump my plates by the road and I got them back after a few days! I drove around with home made permanent marker on paper numberplates until the Police released my real ones but I'm not sure I'd do that these days, this is going back about 16 years.

Very true but the plates will be seized end of drama, heard stories of people facing years of having to prove where they were with evidence about a speeding ticket in the other end of the country. Have a wink ;) back

When plates are nicked in my area all the local petrol stations get an email with the number plate details and a warning saying isolate the pump and phone the police. So expect possible problems in the immediate future

Damn, I don't want any more hassle out of this :(

Saying that I am moving out of my uni house in Coventry to Gloucester in a week so it shouldn't be too hard to prove my whereabouts and that I had nothing to do with it.

I hate thieves.

Shock horror if this happened to you in Coventry. So many druggie thieves around there it's unreal. I hate Coventry. My car was broken into 3 times in the city centre! In a multi storey!! First time they stole my amp.

lol, what do you drive that is such a magnet to crime?

Used to drive a 205 GTi, which is a) a magnet for pikies and b) extremely easy to break into (both a and b being directly linked!). The second time they destroyed my dash but couldn't find the radio face so gave up. Luckily it was about a fiver for a replacement from a scrappie iirc.

Tell me about it, my car was broken into twice outside my house, and my number plates were stolen. All in the space of a couple of months. Both of my flatmates car's have been broken into in the last two years as well.

Damn Coventry, full of thieving ********
