I have 2 working Springer Spaniels and ive been out just on a walk with them both this afternoon and its ended up with a tri to the emergency vets, Luka (3 year old dog) was just running about like he does when he suddenly picked up a stick and before i could give him the command to leave, the stick hit the floor and went through his throat at the back of his mouth, the stick fell out instantly but he cam running back over to me and i looked inhis mouth and say a 1.5inch tear in his throat, we immdeiately chucked the dogs in the car and went to the vets who thought he was going to have to operate so kept him in, we just got a call to go pick him up as they have had several vets down to look at him and they have said they will leave it to self heal as surgery could really make things hard work and cause nerve damage and they are sure it will heal on its own but we have to keep an eye on him for infection etc, he is on really strong pain killers and antibiotics, ive never seen the poor lad so quiet in my life (springer as you all prob know are mental)! I felt physically sick when saw the wound as it looked far worse than it is apprently.
I think the moral of this story is please dont ever let your dogs near sticks please as would hate something bad to happen to what is quite literally a mans best friend.
