I have 2 working Springer Spaniels and ive been out just on a walk with them both this afternoon and its ended up with a tri to the emergency vets, Luka (3 year old dog) was just running about like he does when he suddenly picked up a stick and before i could give him the command to leave, the stick hit the floor and went through his throat at the back of his mouth, the stick fell out instantly but he cam running back over to me and i looked inhis mouth and say a 1.5inch tear in his throat, we immdeiately chucked the dogs in the car and went to the vets who thought he was going to have to operate so kept him in, we just got a call to go pick him up as they have had several vets down to look at him and they have said they will leave it to self heal as surgery could really make things hard work and cause nerve damage and they are sure it will heal on its own but we have to keep an eye on him for infection etc, he is on really strong pain killers and antibiotics, ive never seen the poor lad so quiet in my life (springer as you all prob know are mental)! I felt physically sick when saw the wound as it looked far worse than it is apprently.

I think the moral of this story is please dont ever let your dogs near sticks please as would hate something bad to happen to what is quite literally a mans best friend.

So your dog didn't pick up the stick normally like a dog normally does? instead grabbing the stick end on? or was there a spur coming off the stick that entered the mouth?

I have heard about this happening before. We never throw a stick for our dog anymore, to scared that it would stick in the ground and then impale the pooch. We just buy lots of tennis balls, much safer.

Feel for ya man.

Aww poor dog, hope it heals ok. I never let my dog pick up sticks when we're out, but thats always been incase of infection, never thought of this happening.

I would imagine it's quite a rare thing to happen, I mean, everyone throws sticks for dogs, don't they? It's just a standard thing that is done, no? And I've never heard of a dog getting an infection by just picking up a stick, rebel, especially considering the things they snick and lick when out and about.

Hope your dog gets better soon:)

Best wishes for doggo!

Yup always walk my dogs with tennis balls etc, safer! A good mate of mine told me his dog picked up and injury just like your dog. Such a random thing to happen. Good luck to your pooch :)
