The cake is a lie!

i had portal gifted to me, and never played it due to a few friends saying it was crap.....and when all the hype started about portal 2 , i thought ill give portal a go.....and loved it so much i pre ordered portal 2...... got to be one of the best games ive ever played.........so yea i was late on the portal scene, and glad in a way, as i got to play portal 1 and 2 within a couple of weeks of each other and didnt have to wait months like a lot of people did waiting for the release of portal 2......

I recently finished Portal also, it was great. I can't wait until I can afford to play Portal 2... but mainly for the graphics. They look superb.

I only completed Portal a few months ago. It was a combination of only recently getting Steam and thinking Portal was just some puzzle game (which I don't like). I'm really glad I finally played it because it's pretty bloody good. I doubt I'll bother with Portal 2 for a while yet though; I have far too many games to play as it is. I've no doubt it'll be cheap as chips in the winter sale.

Just played the demo and enjoyed so much I'm currently downloading the full game :D, felt good when I figured out the, albeit not too difficult, puzzels in the demo.

Can't wait for it to DL, Dead Space 2, Fallout 3, Oblivion and Dragon Age: Origins can wait :D.

Why isn't it a lie?

You get to the boss and kill it, and wake up above ground in rubble.

Ok there's a picture of a cake after completion, but I didn't see any cake involved in the plot... So the cake IS a lie. :p

I think that the particular phrase comes from the fact that when you go into one of the rooms, in red writing it's written all over the wall loads of times:

"The cake is a lie!"

When I saw it I thought "oh THAT is where it's from" :p

Guys, Glados promises you a cake at the end of testing, she instead tries to kill you...that's why the cake is a lie :p

The Half Life series is wasted on people who didn't experience the original when it was first released.

Before half-Life we had... Doom? Quake? Duke?

HL was revolutionary.
I barley shot a gun, its just run run run run run .......run.

Portal 1 >>>>>>>> Portal 2. Portal 2 has more cool stuff, but doesn't have the 'fear' feeling Portal 1 has. And imo, it drags too much.
I loved those credits

Same. I downloaded them both

Bought it little under 4 hours ago and I've beaten it already :D. Such a good game, shame I'm 4 years late :p. Wish I had gotten it when it was free but I guess 7 quid is nothing for a very good game. Going to complete other games I need to complete before buying Portal 2 but it's definately high on my list, hopefully it's in the summer sales :D.

It is a brilliant game, I only wish Portal 2 was as good :(

May I ask what's wrong with Portal 2 that takes it's edge away? I can't believe how much I enjoyed Portal after years of putting it off, I just wish it was double the length. I completed it in 3 hours according to Steam which is too short for my liking :(.

I'd seen the achievement "The Cake is NOT a Lie!" in warcraft for ages, so playing Portal the month before I did Portal 2 it was a really big Ahhhhhhh moment. One more of life's many puzzle pieces clicked into place.

Portal 2 was better IMO. I really loved the first one and it certainly was more original being the first, but Portal 2 has some really "wow" moments and some real belly laugh stuff too. Wheatley and the bird eggs and the whole "When life gives you lemons speech" were just hilarious. The original Portal never felt like a complete game; it felt like a really, really good side project that someone had laboured over. The second installment was just so much more polished and complete feeling.

I suppose you have a point. The first definately does have a demo-y feel to it.

And I never really really understood who was supposed to be scawling the messages on the walls in portal (like "help me", or "over here" etc). That part is never really explained.

I thought it was meant to be one of the test subjects before you, and they died in the turret trap because they didn't have the high fall boot things.

It's someone obsessed with companion cubes cause there's pictures on the wall. Like photoshops of women with their head replaced with a companion cube. And other weird stuff.
