I had a thread a while back about moving to London, have finally started viewing a few house shares/flats. Looks like we've found an alrightish one by Archway, what's that like as a place? My girlfriend will be doing a few late night shifts and am naturally concerned about her safety! Any recommended areas to look at?

Found a few nice flats by Notting Hill too which I assume to be nicer/safer but naturally more expensive. Any thoughts?

Cheers.

Archway is quite nice. Highgate is just at the top of the hill. Notting Hill would be preferable though as it is more central, but like you say, it is much more expensive.

Have a peek around Barons Court / West Kensington. Zone 2, in the middle of everything good in west London, but a little cheaper.

Okay, yeah had a little spy around there. Central line would be good as we both work in Holborn. Does anyone know of any decent flat sharing sites bar intolondon.com? Gumtree is a bit of a nightmare!

I'd stay away from Archway if safety for your girlfriend is a concern. If you want to live in that particular area, the places like Crouch End, Highgate, or even Golders Green (where I live!) further up with fit the bill a bit better.

Ohh, I've seen a few flats around Golders Green but frankly I'd never heard of it and assumed it was a bit of the way out?

We're not toooo phased as to where we live just so long as we can get into central quite easily. I'm beginning to regret being raised in white middle-class suburbia as it means that I'm not particularly streetwise, oh well!

Anywhere inside the m25 I'd not like to walk about at night on my own, your not going to pick a 'safe' place realistically where nothing will ever happen, try thinking about offense rather than avoidance, alarms / training etc

If you're looking in that area then try the bit of Holloway near to Caledonian road. Though I'd say avoid the areas around Finsbury park, manor house etc...

Very easy getting into central from Golders Green. Busses 13, 82, 328, N13, N5 all goes to Central or West End and Leicester Square is just a short jog down the Northern Line. You got Brent Cross Shopping Centre close by and Golders Hill Park with tennis courts and as much greenery as you can take in.

Golders Green itself is 'white middle-class suburbia' but we have the highest concentration of Orthodox Jews here of probably anywhere in London. But obviously that's not an issue.

Maybe I'm biased because I've lived here for so long, but apart from a very very select few other areas, there's nowhere else I'd rather live.

Holloway is no different than those areas. It used to be nice 10 years ago but today it's as scummy as the rest of them. Have two friends that live there, one in Jackson road by the McDonalds on the corner and the other further down towards Caledonian. It's rubbish. If I had to live there, I'd go further north up towards Archway where it becomes a bit better.

Huh? Under what basis is that? You're just as safe in London as you are walking around other random towns or cities in the country.

under the basis of statistics...

horrible dirty violent city that sadly has some really good attractions that make me still want to live there :(

34 years in London and not stabbed yet.... (well 29 actually technically)

Some of you people talk a lot of twaddle and believe media hype too much.

You really have no idea what a 'horrible violent dirty city is'... I know tons of people in (and live in) London, and have never ever heard of anyone getting into any kind of remote trouble let alone stabbings, assault, etc which is what you seem to suggest.

Some people here must live very sheltered lives...

Do you live in Brixton or something?

Every large city has it's 'dark places' the majority of London is lovely!

Brixton isn't that bad. Lively and always 'happening'.

In fact every inch of London is now considered to be 'up and coming' - whatever that means. I'm living near Whitechapel. :p

But I suppose you can't exactly go wrong near Notting Hill or Kensington, considerably more expensive...
