Living in London

Huh? Under what basis is that? You're just as safe in London as you are walking around other random towns or cities in the country.

While I'd agree that London is as safe or unsafe as most places there is quite often a weird juxtaposition and sudden change from really quite nice areas to what appears to be quite rough areas - strangely enough it's often just for a block or two as well.

Simply put I wouldn't worry too much about it though.

I think that's more what I was getting at really. I used to live around Gipsy Hill in South London which was reasonably nice but you only sort of had towards West Norwood and it starts getting a bit dodgy.

Thanks for all the posts! I think all places has it's dodgy areas but having not really lived in London I just wanted to get some ideas as to where might be clear areas to avoid. I've heard that Brixton is actually alright now, whoever mentioned that up earlier? Had a night out there a while ago, some pretty good pubs!

You really have no idea what a 'horrible violent dirty city is'... I know tons of people in (and live in) London, and have never ever heard of anyone getting into any kind of remote trouble let alone stabbings, assault, etc which is what you seem to suggest.

Some people here must live very sheltered lives...
Probably depends on your colour, blending in (trackies or whatnot depending on which area as some are probably nice) and how big you are. Obviously idiots target smaller people / women. I had 2 friends who were chinese who both stated that when they lived in london it didn't matter how many people they were with, they just didn't feel safe. I imagine its worse for kids because society ignores kid violence as minor bullying each time though and gangs of kids form easier due to wagging school easier than wagging work (as you need money). I don't know where they lived like I said but either way London has problems and it has some nice areas too but that doesn't make the bad ones disappear.

Pretty sure all the large UK cities have problems like that.

I looked around Archway when we moved down to London. I wasn't particularly sold on the fact that a lot of ground-floor windows are covered by bars ...

yea my live is sheltered because the place i live is clean and i don't feel threatened

and are you really ignoring facts and stats over what your mates dont say to you ?

I was kind when I said Archway wasn't a particularly nice area. It's a ****hole. Much better areas to live in for cheaper or even the same price. How Archway is as expensive as it is is beyond me.

However, I wouldn't necessarily want to live in areas such as central Hampstead as apart from the heart-stopping prices, you have to deal with all sorts of rich snobs and art-type weirdos. If you going to live North, I'd recommend Highgate, Hampstead Garden Suburb , Golders Green, West Hampstead (very nice area) or perhaps Finchley/East Finchley, but it's a bit further out.

Check out Golders Green. You might be pleasantly surprised. However, if you can find a decent place in West Hampstead for a price that does leave you feeling sick, I'd recommend that over Golders Green. But only just.

Nah, but I'm basing my 'facts' on years upon years of actual living in London and not 'stats'.

Anywhere inside the m25 I'd not like to walk about at night on my own, your not going to pick a 'safe' place realistically where nothing will ever happen, try thinking about offense rather than avoidance, alarms / training etc

OP, Archway is a nice area to live in, even British celebrities live there.

so you have been lucky :/ you as one person do not represent the whole or even parts of london. the stats arent perfect either but they give a better idea than one person.

+1

Its just like any other city, you know not to go strolling through certain areas / estates at night. I live in north clapham, I know stockwell is a bit dodgy so I avoid it late at night.

(also thanks for the replies, I need to move shortly.)

I've lived in Hampton (South West suburbs), Fulham (South West), Old Street (North) and Whitechapel (East) and can comfortably say that I've never had any trouble in those areas. If I were to combine myself and all my mates who've lived in London, a group of five of us with years living in London totalling 130, I've only ever known of one of them to get into trouble on one occassion... and he started it!

Sorry to bring this thread back from the ether; have finally found a place and sorted it all. Am going to be living just round the corner from Shepherd's Bush Market, any thoughts on that area at all? Seems alright to me!

Not a bad area. Very Antipodean. Good pubs. Loads of media whores, though will be better once the beeb moves up north. Not a bad shout. :)
