i am between these two phones abd cant decide which one to buy, they are similar with a few differences hardware-wise...do you think the galaxy will get future android updates as opposed to motos problematic support? a bit oh help would be much appreciated:cool:

Hmm I wonder...

SoC.
Defy: 1.2GHz+ cortex A8 and SGX530 (45nm)
Galaxy Ace: Old 800MHz ARM11 that can't run flash etc. (65nm)

Memory:
Defy: 512MB
Galaxy Ace: 384MB

Internal storage:
Defy: 2GB
Galaxy Ace: 512MB

Screen:
Defy: 3.7" IPS @ @ 854×480
Galaxy Ace: 3.5" TFT @ 320×480

Battery:
Defy: 1,540 mAh (still the best Android out there for battery life?)
Galaxy Ace: 1,350 mAh

Defy = Fairly high end single core phone.
Galaxy Ace = Cashing in on the Androids popularity.

Edit:
There might be a new Defy soon (It's getting 2.3.4 leaked builds on XDA btw)
If you don't need the waterproof/rugged features/battery life and don't mind a qwerty keyboard the Desire Z is better, also look at the Samsung Galaxy S.

I'd get a Defy, it'll probably be a bit under that budget too.

Unless you can find a Desire S/Incredible S for that price.

Defy everyday of the week.

Its bulletproof with higher spec hardware to boot and is overclockable to 1.2 -1.3ghz with ease.
I actually overclocked mine to 1.43ghz with some tinkering but I didnt like it that high so settled at 1.3 ghz and it was fine.

No contest in my mind.

Might be a few months before the Desire S (SE Arc/Neo too?) drops to £250.

Here's my picks, try em out at your local phone shop.

Samsung Galaxy S: payg for £250 (unlock/debrand is easy)
Desire Z: Most places for £260. (probably the best if you don't want to mess around)
Defy: Most places for £240

or

LG Optimus 7, £199 for some WP7 goodness :)

also i dont think defy has 1.2ghz cpu, it hosts a 800MHZ A8 cortex AFAIK

That's just marketing, the Milestone 2/Defy 2/Droid X etc need a better spec sheet ;)

mancubus you oc'ed it by loading a custom rom , right? i thought it is quite hard to root a moto...

Root with superoneclick then download this app

No mate, no need for a custom ROM.

1- Download Z4Root.apk (not from Market) and install. One click and you are permarooted.

2- Install Milestone Overclock from the Market, allow Super User request and you are good to go. Simply slide to the clock speed you want and try it.

Once you've found a stable clock modify the voltage (VSEL) settings in the app to get as low you can.

You can get an Xperia Arc second hand for around £250 on ebay, I just got my missus one for £235! She wanted a decent camera as we have a baby and the Desire camera is pretty bad.

The arc seems like a bargain if you can find one. Just got my dad a Defy for £10 a month on Orange, seems like a great little phone.

My nephew has the Ace and it's not bad either, but the low resolution screen really lets it down.
