Update - I'm now looking for a banger for myself as a first car, budget is £2000, with the only requirement being insurance also being under £2000 (separate from car, total car + insurance £4000). Would like something that is easy to maintain and good to drive, not afraid to get my hands dirty.

Hey all, I’m looking for advice buying a car for both me and my parents.

I will be using it for commuting to work (20 miles away so 40 miles/day) as well as shopping and any leisure driving etc, so call it about 9000 p.a. I’m starting a fairly well-paid internship and so can afford something a little nice, but more importantly, my parents will want to use the car once I finish the 12 month placement because they will be coming back to the UK at the same time as I go back to finish my degree.

At this point they will buy back my share of the car and use it themselves. We’re not diehard petrol heads so we don’t need anything special. Our most important criteria are:
- £12,000 budget but obviously less would be better
- Less than 5 years old
- Less than 50,000 miles (ideally less than 40k)
- Low running costs (reason we are after a newish car) and must be reliable. I can't have it in the garage all the time.
- Comfortable, with 4 good sized seats
- Drives well (no sheds please :))

The reason I’m asking for advice is because I will be paying for the car while I use it and so the individual choice is largely up to me – as long as it satisfies the requirement of being comfortable my parents don’t mind too much.

Here is the bad news – I’m 20 and a new driver (having just passed my test). I don’t think the 1 year NCB I have for being insured on the family car last year counts for much so it’s going to be expensive. How should I go about getting the best quote possible? Which insurers specialise in young/new drivers?

With that in mind, I have been looking at small family cars and hatchbacks like these:
2006 Mondeo
2009 Mondeo
Mk5 Golf
Clio 197

I know the prices and types are all over the place but I am trying to find examples of the range of what would be suitable. I like BMW’s too but am hesitant because I think insurance and servicing is going to be out of my league (how expensive are they?)

Tl;dr version:
1. Trade in current family car (Peugeot 306 GLX 1.6 auto)
2. Buy something faster but still comfortable and practical
3. …
4. Profit?
What do y’all think? Are those good deals, are those the kind of cars I should be looking at?

P.S. I think a petrol engine would be better when my parents will use it for max 3000 or 4000 miles per year, but diesel may be better for when I’m driving it, so there doesn’t seem to be a preferable engine type.

Seems strange to be comparing a Clio 197 to a Mondeo. A Clio 197 doesn't have low running costs, isn't all that comfortable and isn't really suitable for long distances. It is a very fun car though.

Sounds like you aren't really sure what you need...

I'm not, that's why I put in the 197, please ignore it :)

12K budget?

Surely you can get a nice audi A3 for that price.

A car that first came out in 2003 and that is due to be replaced within months/a year? The perfect way to spend £12k.

So many better cars to spend £12k on now, the A3 was once a good car but not when you compare it to the latest Mondeo etc...

Ah yes of course. Regardless they are still very good cars.

Maybe the MK5 Golf is a better shout after all.

Can get a GTI for 12K! I know not really suitable for a first car but hey why not :p http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classif.../radius/1501/page/1/postcode/st73px?logcode=p

They are very good cars when you compared them to the cars that it was up against at launch (that would be the Mk4 Golf, Focus Mk1 etc....).

In 2011 compared with the stuff the OP is (for some reason - not sure why) look at it's not a very good car.

The Mk4 Mondeo stands out on that list for me as the outstanding buy-me car, although not at £12k (I'd spend £8k-£9k).

Budget is up to £12k for the right car, not MUST be £12k? If he finds one for a few £k less then bonus, right?

do some quotes first ;) i can't see a clio sport being very insurable at 20 with no NCB.. :)

Can't go too far wrong with a MK5 Golf GTi. Just make sure you get a well specced one (look for heated leather, cruise control/sat nav if possible). Try one with a DSG gearbox - they are fantastic!

Reliable, reasonably economic and have great residuals. You don't need to spend £12k to get a decent one.

Other choices you may not have thought about :

Megane R26 - should be able to get an 07 model for around 8k. Seems to get good reviews.

Civic Type R GT - well specced (cruise, climate etc as standard), interesting (if japanese) interior - slightly harsh ride though so depends on what roads you'll be driving. £8k will get you a decent 07 model.

Octavia VRS - either in petrol (Golf GTi engine) or diesel (Golf GT engine) form. No need to spend anywhere near your budget, but you may not be able to live with the badge.

Can you explain what you mean - why are you not sure why I'm looking at these cars? From reading the spec me threads it seems like a Mondeo or something like it is exactly what I should be looking for - am I wrong? I know the Golf GTi and Clio 197 are a completely different category and I did ask to ignore them. Can you suggest what cars I should be looking at then?

Less of an issue at £12k though surely as he isn't exactly buying a £25k 2011 one.

£12k though still gets you much better cars.

Exactly, so get a decent Mk4 Mondeo for £8k-9k.

Yeah, the idea of a hot 'raw' hatchback being on the same shortlist as a Mondeo is a bit odd, but if you've said ignore and I must have missed that.

I personally feel the Mondeo is better than the A3 in every possible way (apart from the badge on the front). It's a much newer car, the interior is better, it looks better (than your standard A3), it drives better, it's got better equipment and best of all it comes in at a few thousand under your budget.

Can you guys help me get a lower car insurance quote -

car is a 306 1.6 GLX auto, registration W69 HSA
20 year old, no NCB, new license
car will be parked in a segregated bay on street at EH11 2**
full time chemical engineer and will be using it to commute to work

Called Admiral, Adrian Flux and Aviva, all quoted over £3000

Read through this whole thing before getting your insurance

Especially this..

Using the site above, my gf's insurance was ~£600 on her first car, with 0 NCB, then ~£480 for the second year with 1 NCB, she was 22 and a girl though, which will help with prices..

^^ Read and work through that lot, worth it as it can save you hundreds/thousands

Honestly - are there still any ***** out there that have issue with the Skoda badge?
Tought the last of them had died out a while ago.
