Update - I'm now looking for a banger for myself as a first car, budget is £2000, with the only requirement being insurance also being under £2000 (separate from car, total car + insurance £4000). Would like something that is easy to maintain and good to drive, not afraid to get my hands dirty.
Hey all, I’m looking for advice buying a car for both me and my parents.
I will be using it for commuting to work (20 miles away so 40 miles/day) as well as shopping and any leisure driving etc, so call it about 9000 p.a. I’m starting a fairly well-paid internship and so can afford something a little nice, but more importantly, my parents will want to use the car once I finish the 12 month placement because they will be coming back to the UK at the same time as I go back to finish my degree.
At this point they will buy back my share of the car and use it themselves. We’re not diehard petrol heads so we don’t need anything special. Our most important criteria are:
- £12,000 budget but obviously less would be better
- Less than 5 years old
- Less than 50,000 miles (ideally less than 40k)
- Low running costs (reason we are after a newish car) and must be reliable. I can't have it in the garage all the time.
- Comfortable, with 4 good sized seats
- Drives well (no sheds please
)
The reason I’m asking for advice is because I will be paying for the car while I use it and so the individual choice is largely up to me – as long as it satisfies the requirement of being comfortable my parents don’t mind too much.
Here is the bad news – I’m 20 and a new driver (having just passed my test). I don’t think the 1 year NCB I have for being insured on the family car last year counts for much so it’s going to be expensive. How should I go about getting the best quote possible? Which insurers specialise in young/new drivers?
With that in mind, I have been looking at small family cars and hatchbacks like these:
2006 Mondeo
2009 Mondeo
Mk5 Golf
Clio 197
I know the prices and types are all over the place but I am trying to find examples of the range of what would be suitable. I like BMW’s too but am hesitant because I think insurance and servicing is going to be out of my league (how expensive are they?)
Tl;dr version:
1. Trade in current family car (Peugeot 306 GLX 1.6 auto)
2. Buy something faster but still comfortable and practical
3. …
4. Profit?
What do y’all think? Are those good deals, are those the kind of cars I should be looking at?
P.S. I think a petrol engine would be better when my parents will use it for max 3000 or 4000 miles per year, but diesel may be better for when I’m driving it, so there doesn’t seem to be a preferable engine type.
