How do you think this forum would change if usernames were not displayed?

Good lord no. If I adjudge they are are of sound mind from other posts then yes they are ok but treat every poster and every forum as you would the road and every other driver. They are all morons unless they prove otherwise. Duration of driving/posting is in no way indicative of intelligence or sound reasoning or judgement just as quantity of posts isn't.

That is of course my opinion :p

I think to a certain extend post count is valid. I'd be mistified to put a chimp infront of a screen and let him spam OC forums for days without getting banned. :D

But post count does mean nothing.

Ive been here a while, have a high ish post count, rarely have I posted in the hardware forums. If i was to post a reply to a request for info from you in the hardware forums, on post count alone you would think that I know what I'm talking about.

And I do believe after a certain time OCUK do sent out free monkeys for just such a purpose.

It's how I use the forum anyhows, your all one giant amalagmated blob of public opinion to me, I notice the occasional sig here and there.
I always read it in the same manor with the same voice in my head too.

Pretty hard to miss Tefal's sig ;)

nah groen is too similar to kwerk, dickyb0b and radiation to be easily distinguishable :p

kwerk and radiation have not stood out to me but yeah dickyb0b is a bit questionable. Still not on my ignore list though so he's not been THAT bad lol.

I'm fairly sure that toast consumption goes up in any thread that Tefal is a large contributor to.

People would get bored and go elsewhere.

Agreed.

It'd be worse I reckon.

Though one positive which I'm not really sure on how to phrase... currently there's a fair bit of "That person is being a ****, oh wait. They're a mod. I'll smile sweetly instead." whereas if usernames were removed and mods were just one of the community they'd be told "You're an ****" when they were being an ****. People wouldn't know or care that they're a mod. Tell it how it is . There'd be no distinction between kwerk and the mods. If they're a **** they're a ****, whoever they are.

I like to think I'm part of the community regardless of my status. I certainly don't hide behind tinted shades.

If I'm in the wrong 9/10 peeps usually tell me. :)

Come on you can't leave that there, names :p

Ok, just for a few examples: it wouldn't be too difficult to spot you or AcidHell2 as you've got your own idiosyncrasies particularly in regard to spelling. It's not a bad thing per se but having read probably several thousand of each of your posts it becomes something I think you could be identified by.
Dolph: you could probably spot in a few posts based on subject matter, even easier if logical fallacies were brought up in the post although it's now more common than it was to mention them which negates some of the identification value.
Biohazard: if the subject is Scotland or the public sector he'll probably be there within a short time and his style is direct but usually supported with references. Posts being replied to tend to be broken down so you end up with dozens of individual quotes and hefty post lengths from him.
drunkenmaster: look for posts that dwarf almost anything else in the thread, there's often decent points in there as well but you might have to read a lot to reach it.
Pottsey: refuses to use quotes, whether that's for ideological reasons or something else if you see a chunk of text bolded that someone else has previously said the chances are that it'll be his version of quoting.

Admittedly for some people it might take a few posts to get to a fair degree of certainty but I don't think it would be all that difficult to spot certain posters. For me there's an inability to use punctuation properly, I'll throw in a comma or a hyphen to break up sentences but realistically I could do a lot better and prevent so many sentences that extend interminably.

I could have a long conversation with myself and nobody would know.

and nobody would care.
