How do you think this forum would change if usernames were not displayed?

It might be interesting to have a sub forum for a limited time as an experiment.

However I would expect that there are a fair few posters that are instantly recognisable by both their knowledge base and posting style.

As for a forum wide thing, it would destroy what is essentially a community of people that enjoy each others company albeit online rather than in person and as in life we treat each individual on the forum differently depending upon their personality, history and subject under discussion. As this is a forum and not the local pub, the only way we can recognise individuals is by their usernames and in some cases signatures.

To remove them would remove that instantly recognisable individuality and diminish the community spirit of the forum.

It would be rubbish. How could you have a discussion. You wouldn't know who's giving what opinion and you would have no way to follow it over the next 80pages.

Tripcodes? Don't forget that 4chan/canv.as and similar are very popular, high traffic sites that are very much rooted in the idea of anonymity.

Ok, just for a few examples: it wouldn't be too difficult to spot you or AcidHell2 as you've got your own idiosyncrasies particularly in regard to spelling. It's not a bad thing per se but having read probably several thousand of each of your posts it becomes something I think you could be identified by.

The day firefox adds a grammar checker to the spell checker I'll be anonymous!

No community would be rubbish, it's true what's been said though, you can definitely tell people from their posting style.

Think of all you could do with 18 months of clean streets...

It always really bothered me in that film that the mayor was wearing sick amounts of eye make-up in that scene. Looked like the bloody Queen of Naboo!

I could have a long conversation with myself and nobody would know.

I was thinking that as well... IRL I like to plan arguments out the way I want them to go, but they never do... But I would be able to quote myself to my hearts content and address every point put forward by myself with well thought out answers that I would accept as being correct. I would beat myself at debating all day long... OcUK would be my fantasy world free from all the adversity and defeat that plagues my everyday life - a dreamland full of virtual flowers.

Until I got bored and went back to facebook...
