A50 fan control on MSI GD65

is there any way for the fan to automatically adjust speeds based on what i'm doing? my last gigabyte board did this, but my a50 runs at 2015rpm all the time and it's rather annoying.

Cheers

With the MSI MB you can set the percentage of the fans speed in the BIOS via "CPU SMART FAN TARGET" (you can also do this with the case fans) - it will then only increase in speed if it goes over the dictated temperature that you input when setting up fan speed.

E.g. I have a MSI P67A-C45 and i've set my CPU fan speed to 50% (silent) and input a temperature of 50 degrees for the fan to start to spin to full speed. The only time it starts to do this is if i'm stress testing the CPU otherwise it's spinning silently at half it's optimum speed. Once the temps drop below 50 degrees the CPU fan then drops back to 50%.

See i thought i had done this, but can't seem to hear any audible change to my system, which i thought was a tad odd.

Did you remember to save and exit once you had made the changes (F10).

If you did i would try again and double check your settings - it made a massive/noticible difference for me.

Yeah all changes saved, Hwmonitor saying it's a 62% instead of 100%, but i cant hear anything different, even at 50% i couldn't recognise any difference

You should be able to hear a difference between 2000rpm dropped to 1000rpm - with the A50.

Could it be your case fans your hearing?

Have tried you adjusted those too - via the system fans option (same principle)?

I've only got a case fan at the back, which is plugged into the mobo, again running at 50% and not hearing any difference when changing the speeds.

Yeah, it's definatley the cpu fan, gave it a quick tap to slightly slow it down, heard the dip in noise levels, so at least i've isolated which fan it's coming from

So just to clarify:

You've got the cpu and case fan plugged into the appropriate fan headers on the MB and you've set the BIOS settings to 50% - and HW-monitor is reading the rpm at the amended settings (i.e. 50% of optimum speed)?

Have you looked to see if the fans visibly slow down once in windows with the side of the case off? (perhaps there not slowing.)

Set Smart fan Target on mine to 40c

Min Speed - 25% ( I set this at 62.5% to start with but found it too noisy !)

Am running i2500k @4.2 - Speedfan shows fan running @ 797rpm as I write.- am running the ALC Eco with one fan.

I hope this helps.

Set target to 60 degrees for testing (i have mine at 50 degrees)

It may be your target temp is too low - so the fans aren't dropping as they still trying to cool the cpu/system.

I would save your clock profile in the BIOS and try a cmos reset - and then try again.

Failing that a BIOS update.

Additional: Are you sure you haven't got any OS software overiding the settings?

I've already given this a bash, don't know whether to just replace my cooler or not.

AFAIK i don't have any other software, i've got msi control center, but can't see anything in there that is out of the ordinary, and it's been this loud since i put the new build together.

Isn't the stock A50 fan a 3 pin fan? Meaning it won't respond to PWM control.

You might find you need to change a setting in BIOS and use Speedfan to slow the fan down.

Or get a PWM fan such as an Apache or Viper.

It responded to PWM on my previous gigabyte board though, that's whats confusing me.

That's one difference to my setup - i don't have the CC installed. Perhaps double check the info/settings within the app to check that it's not conflicting with the BIOS entries?
